36 hours in WV: small stream trout video

Recommended Posts

What fly are you using???

I caught most of my fish on Royal Wulff's and black elk hair caddis. Every fish I caught came on dries, I used a few other patterns but those were the main 2.

And your set up? I will hopefully be in west Virginia later this year and thought going after some brook trout would be fun!

My small stream setup is a 7'9" 3wt (St Croix Avid), WF floating line. You can get by with shorter leaders when the flows are good, nothing longer than 7' usually needed, and I go as heavy as I can get away with on the tippet thanks to my habit of hanging in trees. I used 5X on this trip, at low flows in the summer/fall I'll drop to 8X.

Nice video looks like a fun day. I have a Kodak Playsport which I use a lot for shooting fishing vids and I am currently considering adding a Gopro Hero to my equipment. What is this "Blur fix mod" that you listed? is that the flat lens mod? if so who's did you get?

It is a flat lens modification. I ordered mine through Amazon.com. I was going to go with a cheaper mod like the Mako lens, but I saw that the photo filter size BlurFix allowed you to use was the same size as my filters I have for my Nikon D70 macro lens. I wanted to be able to use the polarizing and warming filters with the GoPro. All of the GoPro footage in the video above I shot using the polarizing filter to help cut some glare.

This is what the camera looks like with the mod installed:
