EzGoing 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2012 Okay, I asked about the Peak Vise Light and received one reply. So, I'll take that as it is...not a commonly used light or not well received. What about the McKenzie vise light? I looked at tthe OTT lights but prefer a true vise light which I can clip onto the vise or vise station. Anyone use the McKenzie light? famill00 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2012 I tie with a Pro Lite. Its cree, so it mimicks daylight. You have the option to put it on the vise or use it with its stand. It also has the magnifier. I think I paid 119. Best investment ever. -Forrest
fishing on the fly 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2012 I have the McKenzie light. It works fine. I wish I had the one with the magnifier though.
TOM PRUETT 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2012 I got the McKenzie BRIGHT light. With the 4X MAG for my son's boy scouts class .And we have been tying flies and having a blast doing it.The light works well but runs.. REALY HOT ..If left on for a long time. This is NOT the best light for videos of your flies .And does NOT have an ON/OFF switch. But i still like it..and the 4x mag is a must have for tiny little flies lol
oldtrout58 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2012 Okay, I know you were asking about the Peak and now the McKenzie light, so my comment does not address your specifics, but this what I've been using for ten or so years (light/magnifer) and I'm happy with it. http://giraffelamps.com/fly.htm
whatfly 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 As Tom P. mentioned, the McKenzie is a good enough light but it burns hot...too hot in my opinion. If you are just looking for a portable light, the 13 watt Ott Lite is the best I've found. For at the desk, get a couple of architect's lamps and true color light bulbs and you will be set. tonysurface 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 I use a Daylight Hobby Lamp for tying. I also have an Ottlite clamped to a shelf above my tying area to light the other side of my desk. I looked at the McKenzie and Peak light before buying the Hobby Lamp. For the price, you can't beat the Hobby Lamp as long as you have space on your desk for a table mount. If not, they make a floor mounted version too. Save the money you would spend on one McKenzie and get two or three Daylight or Ottlite lamps. I bought mine on Amazon. Best prices I could find. SilverCreek 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2020 I use a TaoTronics LED lamp. It folds up so it fits into my tying kit. This one is on sale now: https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-Charging-Temperatures-Brightness-Licensing/dp/B07QPS3JHK/

DFoster 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2020 Usually I'll buy the highest quality that I can afford when it comes to tying. In the case of my lamp, I spent the big money at the dollar store and purchased a sunbeam LED desk light. It cost me a buck. I actually bought two of them and keep one as a spare, so two bucks. It never gets hot (LED) and is powered from a wall outlet so no batteries. In unscientific testing it seems to put out the same amount of light as the $40 LED desk top lamps at Office Max located next to the Dollar store. I don't know how long it will last but I can say the quality is way better than you would expect for a buck. - The power switch has 3 levels of light power, it has a flexible neck and it's available in black or white. AND it cost a buck. I've been tying for a year with it and the spare is still in the box. At 14" It is a little short for my vise with the taller stem so I have the lamp up on a block.
