Nice job. I would do some in gray and white to immitate striped mullet. I think they would be killer on stripers and reds.

There is a tyer I know from New Orleans area that ties wool head flies like these and he uses Fabric Fusion , that he gets from a craft store on the heads. Don't know if it holds up better or worse than silicone though.

Those look great NY. I never thought about bucktail for the tail. I always used feathers, I like the bucktail.

I usually tied these without any thing on the wool until on the boat. If I wanted a sinker, just leave as-is. If I wanted it to float, I'd smear Albolene (pure silicone facial "cleanser" and general cure all found in Walgreens) all over the wool basically like the GE Silicone but it doesn't dry. That stuff works as a great fly floatant for clipped deer hair bugs too.

Guys thanks for the comments!

On a honest note (I hate to bring it up again) but i wanted to make it VERY clear, the other post (which im sure you all saw), I honestly was joking, why would I lie? I dont try to crave attention on this site. I love to fish and tie and ask questions like everyone else does. Just wanted to make that clear. Thanks for the comments!

Kirk - I took your advice and have been in contact with Pops - He told me there is a bunch of differently made wools and fleece - what type do you use? He also said to try out "flex loc", you ever or anyone ever try it out? Its suppose to be lighter than silicone, dries clear and dries in half the time....popovics seemed to really like the "flex loc". If you google "flex loc fly tying" it comes right up.

He also stated I can try tieing one of his "hollow fleyes" with bucktail then just use silicone, ccg flex or flex loc and create an head. Seems like a really good idea.....

Let me knoe what everyone thinks! Kirk I like your patterns a lot better than mine! Yours truly look like baitfish! Nice job as usual! I am "so so" with mine. I think I need to do a better job of trimming.....let me know what you guys think!

Fred, I def agree with you, once I get these down pat a little more I want to make some neat colors like you stated!

Thanks NY. I'm not sure what kind of wool it is, I think it is Ram's wool; the packages are labeled Sculpin Wool. Most of what I use comes on a patch of hide and some of the sculpin wool I have is a thick noodle about a foot long and inch across like synthetics come packaged. I use the natural patch stuff for the transition and the stuff off the hide goes in a dubbing loop and wrapped around for a head. Although I use the patch stuff in the loop too. I was just never comfortable spinning it on the shank like deer body hair but I will stack it sometimes.

Your new one looks good.

Thanks K! Yea the new one came out with a nicer profile I think.....still not exactly happy with it, but now comes the test in the h20!

Kirk - The stuff in the noodle (I think) is also called "roving." I saw some of it being dyed in a video, and that's what they called it. I ordered sculpin wool online and I got one of the noodles. I ordered it from another company and got the stuff on the hide. (it was short belly wool) Rams wool is usually longer and a bit straighter, though it can vary a lot. From what I can tell, they seem to sell just about anything under any label they can think of. It got to the point where I was so confused, I said to hell with it and bought a pure white long-haired sheepskin from England and a bunch of dye in various colors. From now on, I'll make my own. BTW - I was in Walmart the other day, and they had lambs' wool dusters for $5. It was beautiful soft white wool. If I hadn't just got my sheepskin, I would have bought a few. Great looking material, worth checking out.

H20 with fly line, leader and hopefully fish is the real test. You don't know how much stuff I've tied that I swore coming off the vise would slay them only to find something needed tweaking.

Peter, those duster sound great, I've seen those before just have enough packaged stuff already. The Sculpin Wool I have on patches, I got from Chris Helm and I think he told me it was ram's wool, its about an inch and a half long which is perfect for wool heads. I don't know if he is in business any longer. The noodle stuff I got from Feather Craft but it was pictured and advertised as such so no surprises, it works great in a dubbing loop. I think if I added dying materials to the stuff I already do around here, I'd be out on the street for sure!

I have a student who is a knitter who recently gave me a hunk of merino wool (if I remember correctly). I don't know if it will work too well on flies but I will give it a shot. I have used EZ Shape Sparkle Body on silicone style flies but mostly with craft fur or polar fiber. It works well, it's pliable when dry and has the added sparkle. I think T-Shirt paint found in fabric stores is pretty much he same thing but cheaper.
