Piker20 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2012 I like it because of the space it has to put your hand on the left of the hook. that's one thing that annoys me about normal vices. I have to agree thats a bug of mine. One of the reasons I am holding off a norvice. Grouch, Interested to know where the Nor lets you down for the deerhair bugs? Very subjective subject the whole vice thing. Maybe as someone still a virgin of the true rotary vice, I should ask the big companies for some free trial vices to do a tie and compare! Maybe as someone still a virgin of the true rotary vice, I should ask the big companies for some free trial vices to do a tie and compare! I could ruin you for life! Come round and tie a few on my LAW Bench Vice. You will not be taking it away though! Cheers, C.
grouch 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2012 Grouch, Interested to know where the Nor lets you down for the deerhair bugs? It doesn't at all really. The only thing it doesn't do that I like to have for deer hair is I like to rotate the base of the vise away from me so I can look at the back of the fly sometimes. The mounting board makes that a little awkward. Besides, I was kinda grasping for reasons to buy another vise. I do adore my Nor, it has become my favorite of all the vises I have owned out of a Traveler and a HMH Spartan. It didn't take me long at all to get the hang of it. Also, what seems to be frequently over looked is the crazy hook hiding power and the sheer elegance of the vise. Norm did a great job.
Panama Red 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2012 I believe Norvise has a rotating and height adjusting stem available. Been meaning to check on price and availability, maybe today...it's raining buckets. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/30146_118479914856354_6595819_n.jpg
FrequentTyer 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2012 I keep a little cut off hex key on my bench and when I weave flys I just loosen the locking screw at the base of the Nor Vise post and it rotates out just fine. I have the post in Panama Red's picture. I thought it was standard. It is not height adjustable but it does rotate around its main axis.

Have had my Norvise for about four years, it came with a solid post... Do you fine the rotating feature useful? EDIT: I just talked to Norm Norlander, what a nice guy! They don't offer the rotating base feature anymore...
FrequentTyer 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2012 Have had my Norvise for about four years, it came with a solid post... Do you fine the rotating feature useful? EDIT: I just talked to Norm Norlander, what a nice guy! They don't offer the rotating base feature anymore... That's actually funny. When I first bought mine I couldn't figure out why it had some wiggle in the post. I talked to Norm (who is indeed a genuinely nice guy) and he told me to tighten that screw with a hex key. He said that they had made those posts for guys that wove flys, but that not many people did that anymore. I guess he decided it wasn't worth the extra cost. The reason I say it's funny is that I never thought I would weave a fly when I bought the vise, but now I do, and it is the only time I use that rotating feature. So yes, I find it useful, but only for weaving. If for some reason I had to buy another, the lack of rotation would not influence my decision.
grouch 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2012 Norm is a nice guy, in fact his personality was a large reason I bought the vice to begin with. As much as I would like a Renzetti Master I know I will never get one. Not because of the $700 for the vice but because the reputation for surliness they have developed over the years. Don't pewp where you eat kinda thing. Now Norm on the other hand will spend all the time it takes to help you, it's just good maintenance in the purest sense. petelangevin 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2012 I have a nor vise with the rotating base. I never use the feature , I all but loctited it recently. Love the vise otherwise. I would never turn down a law. Only othervise that intrigues me is the jvise. It is so smooth and if you like gadgets and options there are more than enough different things to keep the tyer with add occupied. But will probably keep tying on the norvise until my hands or eyes fail. It just keeps on going.
