Choko must have fly patterns

Recommended Posts

I will fishing Choko for two days a starting the 27th. I was hoping someone could share a few must have patterns for snook and reds. My dad lives in Punta Gorda but doesn't fly fish and isn't tied into the action at Choko. Any help would be much appreciated.

This time of year it's mostly baitfish patterns... You'll want a selection of sizes for everything from tiny glass minnows (bay anchovies or majua) up to small mullet. If it's calm in the morning small poppers are great fun. We're using mostly very light colors and winter's purple, black, and browns get a rest.... If at all possible you'll want everything except poppers to have a weedguard...

The pics will range from small (#4 to #2 hooks) up to stuff on 3/0 hooks. Standard Mustad 34007 hooks will do for all but the occasional tarpon - for tarps you'll want a bit stronger hook, I mostly favor the Owner Aki in 1/0 up to 3/0...

Hope these will give you a starting point.

I'll do the Schminnows as small as #6 but a #4 or #2 is my usual fare. The poppers are on soft foam heads with a #1 hook. The Whitewater Clouser is on a 2/0 hook with the largest bead chain eyes (plumber's chain) you can get. Silhouettes are a universal pattern with small lead eyes, on an Owner Aki 2/0 hook (my biggest snook on fly, a 21 lb fish was taken on a white Silhouette). Seaducers are great when you're fishing very shallow around small bait (we do them in red/white, pink/white, and the color shown) using a #2 hook - note the wire weedguard... The Razor Cut is a mullet pattern (one of many, pick your own...) on a 3/0 hook...

Thank you very much for your reply Captain. This is more than enough to get me going.

The fishing in Choko last week was difficult to say the least after Debbie did her thing. Most of the state of Florida was emptying into the Glades and right out into Choko. But despite the conditions I am happy to report that the Sea-Ducers and Clousers were producers and got me a few snook and redfish. I tied the Sea-ducers with a rabbit hair collar, which seemed to work well. Thanks again Captain.

Glad to hear that Deb didn't completely screw your fishing...if ya got any pics post 'em up...this former Florida boy misses his snook and reds...

Here ya go, this is from the last two weeks along the Gulf coast of the 'Glades. I didn't post the fishing reports here since we weren't using fly gear those two days.....

Came off the water at just before 2Am this morning from a very good fly trip. The baby tarpon (10-30lbs) were on fire, we jumped 8 fish and brought three to the boat on 8 and 9wt rods in about four hours, locally in Biscayne Bay. The fish did my angler's gear some damage in the process - he broke an 8wt Sage rod and lost the last thirty feet of a fly line to another fish. I'll have a full fishing report on that in a day or two...
