tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2012 I don't have a favorite brand, as I've used them from several sources, and they all seem to be about the same. I guess those sold by Witchcraft Tape Products are likely the most popular. If I had to choose one it would be something with a silver background & black center 3D type. IMO, that color looks the most natural to me. Although, I also like chartreuse & black, which on some natural colored flies adds a bit of extra color, and some contrasting color. Not sure how important that really is, but have had days when the flies with the chartreuse eyes out produced those with silver eyes, when the rest of the fly was the same colors. I also try to use the largest eye that seems to fit a particular size fly, especially for saltwater since many of the baitfish species seem to have rather large prominent eyes. Again, not entirely sure how important that is, but it works well for me. In other discussions, it's been mentioned that "matching the hatch" when it comes to schools of baitfish is not always the best approach, since it's the stragglers, the wounded or not so healthy that often get eaten by predators, and that those little color differences may indicate to predators something is not right with that baitfish (fly) and it's easy prey. I think this has as much merit for a reason to sometimes change things up as any theory on why our flies get eaten, or not! I'll use silver first, then chartreuse, then gold and finally red, and will black centers in order of preference.
agn54 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2012 I use regular 3d eyes and get mine off ebay, they are far cheaper there than anywhere else (a few bucks per 100 or more rather per 20 as in most shops). I use several different colors but when in doubt always go to red. I know it's not a natural color but for me I think it's the most effective. I guess my thinking is based on the fact that the mirrolure is my favorite plug and they all use the red eyes. In any case, I have had a lot of luck with them so I keep using them. My preference is 5mm but will use 8 and up to 10mm on larger flies
