Also have you ever been hooked? Been hooked with plugs by friends and seen cousins hook each other in the lip while fighting over a spot, in both cases the hook point was pushed through the skin, barb cut off , and hook pulled back out...then cleanse the wound! utyer 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2012 Yes, I have been hooked, and I have used this method of hook removal a few times on others, and have instructed others how to do this on hooks I have had in me. It works quite well on small fly hooks upto about size 4. First you need some strong mono, at least 17 or 20#. Using the butt section of a leader will work. Make a loop from about 24" of the mono line, I like to have enought to make one loop around my hand. Cut the leader from the fly. Place the closed end of the loop over the fly and draw it back to the bend. Tell the hooked person to look away, this is important, they MUST NOT watch the next steps. Push gently down on the eye of the hook. While holding the eye down, give the loop around the bend a quick pop (snap back) straight away from the eye in line with the shank. First time I tried this was on an man who had hooked himself while pulling his fly off of an automatic reel. THe hook was imbedded in the base of his thumb. Hook was snapped out before he knew I had done it. The second time, I had to tell someone else how to do this, the hook was in the back of my ear. Again the hook was out before I knew it, it blead a little, but no pain. Try it a few times on an orange til you get the hang of it. I wouldn't use this method on big saltwater or bait hooks, and never on someone who is double hooked.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2012 If you apply pressure directly down on the hook eye. loop your mono line around the bend close to the skin and while applying downward pressure you pull on the line. Helps if you have second person. It will hurt. Yanking will work but hurts. Push barb round and cut off is ok but you risk introducing more infective material into the body from the shank of the hook. Visit your local ER and they will use some local and remove and stick you with the tetanus you might need. If you have had 5 boosters in your life you shouldn't need anymore. I will remove probably 2 hooks minimum a week over the next few weeks at work and tend to use method 1 for hooks < #10 and method 4 for bigger. Trebles are awkward cause you need to watch the other points when you remove the stuck one. Hoping it is just 1! Also if you get a big hook in a facial area, taping it to the skin prevents excess movement which will reduce inflammation and make removal a lot easier. Very Very important if its in or around an eye.
Rocco 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2012 If you fish alone, be prepared to do the removal method above on yourself. I have had to do it on a deep meat embedded, large gap, hook. The initial impact of such an event is a lot like being stabbed as there is attendant shock that addles your presence of mind a bit. You HAVE to do it, so drilling the movements beforehand is good for your muscle memory. The pain of the removal even on a severely embedded hook is not that bad. Anything in the eye needs to be removed by a pro. Cover the wounded area and get to a doctor. JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2012 OK< so the most obvious answer which has been neglected is to make sure you de-barb all your hooks. Twice this year I've stuck myself bend-deep with hooks, and just pulled them right out. If you're fishing with other people, print that pic above and keep it with you, that should be enough to convince them to mash the barbs of their hooks too.
