Fly fishing southern Utah

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping to get a little advise on what to tie/bring to a fishing trip in southern Utah. My wife and I are planning on stopping near Panguitch Lake outside of Bryce Canyon during the middle of September. I was able to research the BWO and caddis flies will be hatching around that time, can anyone confirm this and does anyone have any advice on where we might have the best luck in the area?

Thanks!

A lot depends on where you plan on fishing. Are you planning on fishing in Panguitch Lake or in some of the nearby streams? If fishing the lake, I would plan on fishing more leach patterns and streamers than dry flies. On the streams, you are not too late for hoppers. You will probably be a little early for BWOs but bring a few. Caddis will definitely be a major food source. Tan in 12-16 and black in smaller sizes will usually cover you. Try streamers for bigger browns that will be getting ready to spawn.

With all the rain we have had the rivers are high and brown in many places. Panquitch is low, but fishing, lots of pressure though.

Southern Utah right now is marginal for quality water. Head to Lee's ferry is you can swing it. Always a product place to wet a fly and the

walk-in is fishing. Be careful wading as the edges have a quicksand like silt to deal with.

I fish the Panguitch area once a week if not more during the summer months..September is Hopper time. So Hoppers, Stimulators and Elk hair Caddis will get it done. Heres the problem right now..They closed off the dam water so Panguitch creek is a trickle right now. So I would look at Mammoth creek or make the drive to Anitmony and fish the Anitmony creek. (AC creek)

If you fish the lake its all about the Blk or Olive Whooly buggers fished near the bottom. I was at the lake yesterday and they stocked thousands of small Rainbow trout..3 to 8 inch models.
