What are some good hatch matching flies to start on?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for flies to tie that aren't Woolly Buggers or stramers or anything. I want to start with actual insect imitating flies. I live in Idaho so you get an Idea of the hatched. Also, can you tell me the materials I need and a good size to tie them in?

Check the threads on "Step by Step Tutorials". It's right here on the forums page ... about 6th or 7th down from the top. Complete information from recipes to finished photos.

A few all-around subsurface patterns you can't go wrong with are the gold ribbed hare's ear, and pheasant tail nymphs, to imitate light and dark mayfly nymphs. Another easy one that requires very little materials and skill, but is very effective, is the zebra midge, which imitates midge pupa.
