Holographic Mylar Sheets

Recommended Posts

I've been searching high and low for sheets of double-sided holographic mylar that I want to use to make flash for offshore poppers and flies. I've still got a few sheets I bought at some craft shop or other years ago, but I haven't been able to come up with a current source. All I've been finding is the adhesive-backed or the paper-backed types, which are useless for my purposes. I do know that Witchcraft makes holographic flash skirts for offshore lures, but I haven't even been able to come up with a cost-effective source for them. This stuff has to exist somewhere. :( Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Peter, how long are the popper bodies? I bought a spool of holographic mylar ribbon quite a few years ago, and used it for covering bodies on Banger type poppers and making spoon flies. Wasn't sheets, but still might work for you. It was about an inch wide as I recall with the flash on both sides. A shop that sells ribbon might be a source. Since then I've used the Witchcraft tape with one side having adhesive.

Here, found this online Holographic Ribbon

Peter, are you looking to cover/glue on to the popper or tie in as a tail? I remember seeing around the holidays, mylar "tinsel" that was probably an eigth of an inch wide strands about eighteen inches long; used to come in pearl, silver and gold. Not sure if they still sell that around the holidays or not, our local Wal-Mart has already stocked Christmas stuff, I'll have to check the next time I'm in there.

Jim - I was thinking maybe 1 1/2 - 2 inches or so. I've got some 1-inch diameter foam cylinders that would make some nice bangers for offshore. I'm also thinking of something akin to Cam Sigler's popper heads, although I think I can do something a little more streamlined and prettier than his. (After all, the fish are always on the lookout for superior craftsmanship.) I started turning a couple yesterday on my high-speed "lathe" (an electric drill) but my shop isn't organized yet, and I can't find all my rasps, sanding materials, etc. Assuming I can throw this stuff with my 12wt, I think they might work on stripers. Be fun to try anyway.

Kirk, I was actually thinking of both. I'd also like to try to make some skirts similar to what they use on offshore lures. I've definitely gotta do my annual hunt through the Christmas displays to see what they've come up with this year. Unfortunately, in this neck of the woods, it's either Walmart or nothing. (not that I'm complaining)

I'm sure there's some deep-rooted psychological reason why I'm always searching for hard-to-find stuff, but I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because I've already bought everything that's readily available. Or more likely, it's because I'm half a step away from spending my golden years confined to a rubber room.

Peter you might try looking at the dollar stores or wallmart for iceciclesits strips of tinsel works great as flash and its precut I use it on some of my pike streamers I throw with my 10 wt

Sounds like a tour of the dollar stores might be a good idea - we've got plenty of them around here. Here's another promising possibility I dug up on Ebay - guess the ladies are using holographic tinsel in their hair these days. Don't know how wide the stuff is, but it looks good, especially in the length they're selling. Also, this latest fashion trend might take the pressure off the guys who've been getting priced out of the genetic hackle market.

I used to do a bit of flash on popper bodies and didn't use mylar sheets at all. What I came up with was large mylar braid. I'd remove the core (usally on 3/8" braid) then cut a piece, push it together to enlarge it then slip it over the popper head and pull tight (like a Chinese finger trap). Once in place, coat with whatever finish needed and it would appear like the poppper head was made that way at a factory..... Hope this helps

Fred, that Gummi foil is interesting stuff - sounds like it could have a lot of uses besides gummi minnows. (I'm thinking albacore flies) Yet one more item to add to my shopping list. (Does it ever end?)

Speaking of gummi minnows: some years ago, I got it into my head to make some, so I bought some Sili-Skin. It sounded good, but when I peeled off the backing, it turned out to be the stickiest substance ever devised by man. It stuck to my fingers, it stuck to the vise, it stuck to itself, it stuck to everything within a 12-inch radius. And even worse, it picked up every particle of hair and other debris in the room, up to and including several species of flying insects. That stuff makes Super Glue look like axle grease. The best use I can think of for it is expensive fly paper. It's got nothing to do with this thread, but I thought I'd share that anyway.

Terry, the blanket idea doesn't sound crazy to me - I was thinking the same thing.

Bob, I've seen some beautiful poppers and slider made with your method. That's definitely something I want to try - I've got some tubing kicking around here somewhere.

I really appreciate all the help guys. :)

There is a little independent fishing store near me that carries a lot of materials for lure makers....I have purchased the one-sided mylar sheets w/adhesive backing from them.....I will stop in and see if they have any of the double sided stuff you have described....

Peter, I think you'll find it's what you are looking for. It's a sheet of double sided mylar in an array of fishy colors with no adhesive. I bought some to make backing for home made eyes.

Many thanks Fred and Mike - the ideas have been coming so fast and furious lately that I've actually started a file and been writing them all down. (I have enough trouble remembering what state I'm living in when I wake up in the morning) This forum has gotta be the most valuable tying resource on the planet. Makes me wonder how the heck I got along all those years without this kind of input. :)
