Noggin10 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2012 Ok, so I picked up materials the other day and am tying Zonkers. They'll be fished hook point up. Does the zonker strip ride upright or downward? In order for it to be upright I have to pierce the strip with the hook but in none of the videos I've watched are they tied like that. Thanks for any answers. flytire 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2012 you dont need to pierce anything when tying a zonker follow these instructions http://www.flyfishusa.com/newsletter/121408/
Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2012 i know what you mean noggin, the deer hair is underneath if you flip the hook. it will only matter if the bottom is sludge or slime weed that fouls the hair and reduces movement. in that case i would pierce it so it fishes 'right way' but for 99% of time just tie like the link above. I would ask why you need to flip the hook? zonkers are aimed at baitfish imitation so there are better patterns to drag through the mud?
Phish 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2012 I haven't tied these since the beginning of my tying but I dont see why you can not reverse the hook point so it rides up. Another thing is to use a straight eye instead of turned down eye. I have been piercing the hook thru rabbit strips on a lot of streamer flies so it doesn't foul so it works great for me and I make sure hook gap is suffiecent. Another thing is usually will go the Tube style route anyway cause it gives more hook up and less fly loss.
phg 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2012 In order to get it to ride hook point up, you need to add some weight to the top of the hook, usually bead chain or dumbbell eyes. You would do that if you want to imitate a prey species that sticks near the bottom, like sculpin, log perch or stone rollers. You are correct, though, you have to punch the hook through the zonker strip, and then bind it down in the inverse position, so it will be the back of the fly as it is retrieved. Thanks for any answers. Use the "hook point up" method. Go to YouTube and search for juniors hpu minnow. Basically it involve tying the fly on the weedless portion of a weedless hook.
