Chefben4 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2012 Kevin I am in still. Im a little confused on exactly what you want here. Do you want only straight up intruders? Or intruder style? Some of the best patterns in my neck of the woods are intruder style (i think you would call them that).. Basically on an articulated shank, fireline/intruder wire, circle hook etc.
eastern fly 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 I dont want to pin people to one thing this time so im looking for intruder styles. Kevin
Chefben4 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 I dont want to pin people to one thing this time so im looking for intruder styles. Kevin Thanks Kevin. I am going to tie Mike Decoteau's "Evil Twin Brother" if thats ok. This is what it looks like.. EDIT: You guys no longer get a choice if this is acceptable. Material order in and it cost a lot of $$, so you'll just have to accept
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 That pattern i have two words 'steelhead murder!' Still not sure what i am going to tie but will have to borrow a buddies vice in Aussieland, going to pack a few materials along with my shanks as i highly doubt shanks are available there. So i will be sitting on the patio watching the beach tying intruder type flies that is for sure, perhaps a nice ice cold beer or two, nice summer day. Oh it is going to be a hard life! Wish Khoss would join just for once, he ties amazing steelhead flies.

Random question (because from listening to your show it sounded like you were a native aussie?) in any case, do they actually have Fosters beer over there? lol. Not because i like it, because I dont. Just a random thought haha. Yes, that fly kicks ass. Been wanting to tie it for a while just needed a reason. Jam' any recommendation on hook size? FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Yeah i am Aussie, been up here in Canada about 8 years now but often fly back for visits/ fishing. One day i should put on my heavy accent to confuse everyone as to what the hell i am saying. Fosters generally you cannot buy in the drive through liquor stores (yes we have drive through liquor). It is mainly an 'export' beer and i don't think is very nice at all! Fosters is big shares as they own great wine companies such as Wolf Blass which is all around the world. Real Aussies drink coopers. http://www.coopers.com.au/ Strangely i really like a mango beer https://www.matsos.com.au/beer.php it is not very sweet or fruity, just a slight aroma and on a hot day or with spicey foods it goes down very nicely. I like most of the Matso's beer, comes from the land of Permit on the fly. Up here i like a few micro brews, always find myself drinking wheat beers tho. Ahh hook size for that awesome fly maybe a 2 or 4 octopus?

You know me Im brewer so Im a craft beer guy. However, I am a huge fan of doing the beers around the world. Right now I am on a Belgian Strong Ale kick. Did I mention you and I need to meet up one of these days. Toronto isn't TOO far away and I can show you a musky or too! Ok, off the thread hiack! Sorry Eastern lol. FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Yeah fosters is an awful beer! Blergh! hahaha. Nothing wrong with a beer talk hijack, i think it may even be needed as this swap is one where you could really let the creative juices flow. I have been so good all week and now feeling thirsty, i am wondering if you have any hot tips i *might* be able to find here? Strong Ales are so yummy at this time of year, heavy and full of flavour tho we don't get many, i think one is 'hobgoblin'. Definitely need to catch up one day, maybe this coming spring or summer. Not confirmed yet but i could be in the D on may 24. Got couch space up here, we are right downtown next to a lot of pubs. Just to stay on topic, i really like the look of these pink ones too. Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Hobgoblins a great ale, Bishops finger is tasty. I don't live far from a brewery that produces some lovely real ales called Black Isle Brewery. BACK on the thread has anyone looked at the turd wrangler fly posted by Frank G. Swarner III in the salmon/steel thread? Is this an Intruder Style? It kinda suggests it a little to me? I am looking at tweaking this pattern and making it a little more aggressive and Intruderish
Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Just to stay on topic, i really like the look of these pink ones too. Jam, can't wait to see your fly for the spring swap. I can feel new rod for the seasons first springer in my hands already.
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2012 Bishops finger just doesn't sound right! Black isle sounds okay, hey what temperature do you serve the dark ales at? Oh yeah the thread, that fly i would probably say (this is just me and i am no expert) but it is a 'tube fly' of some sort, interesting the trailer hook has material on it. Will have to consult my books and see if i can find something similar. Put it on a shank and you will be closer to an intruder variation. I had some thoughts once of an articulated mullet pattern using black EP fiber on the trailing hook to form a 'tail'. Also found with the recent craze of 'shanked' flies if one omits the dumbell eyes and still requires the hook point to ride 'upright' 2 strips of leadfree or lead wire on the underside of the shank helps. Often tho like the ones Chefben posted the wing is satisfactory to right the fly in the current. Obviously a lot of people have a lot more experience than me but intruders are an absolute 'must have' for steelhead. So many times they will ignore a small egg or nymph but absolutely cream a big fly. I have even seen them chase down the fly and kind of flash their sides at it in a weird way as if to say 'bugger off'.
eastern fly 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2012 I have see that fly on there site. At some point I want to do it also. I will be a great fly for the swap. Kevin
Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2012 Real ale has to be served room temp. Never ever not ever never cold. Its not like lager. Its mans nectar. Er.... You know what I mean. looking at a few more articles and videos discussing Ed Ward and Intruders I see people mentioning 2hr tie times. What am I missing cause even with combing out material it don't seem that long winded? Kev, mine will be on a 40mm tube but I might also try some shanks when my stinger hooks arrive. Is everyone adding the hooks with their submissions?
