willg180 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2013 This March I will be hiking in the Smokey mountains of North Carolina, where we will, of course, be wetting a line. I'm not from the area though. I was wondering if anyone from the area knew what the hatch would be doing up there around that time, or if any locals had any go to flies for the streams up yonder. Thanks, from a lowcountry South Carolinian!
switch10 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2013 I'm not from the area either, but I always look up hatch charts for new places whenever I travel... This seems like a decent hatch chart for that area: http://www.flyfishingnc.com/fly-hatch-chart-north-carolina-smoky-mountains

troutguy 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 You NEED to buy the Southern Appalachian Fly Guide by J.E.B. Hall. Great guide book. I bought mine at The Market in Charleston. Hatches down here are not like the Catskills in NY. Things seem to happen all at once or more spread out because of the season of bugs being longer. On the Beaverkill River there was many a night that if you didn't have the exact match you might as well go home. Down here it is not as common an occurence. phg 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2013 This site has a pretty good hatch chart as well: http://www.flyfishingnc.com/index.php LRO is on the west side of Smoky Mts National Park. NC is mostly freestone streams, and the fish are opportunistic feeders. Certain patterns work better than others, and there are certain special hatches that can be fished, but the biomass is not that great in any of our streams, so the trout aren't that selective.
