Photo theft: it happened to me

Recommended Posts

Huh, interesting. I think I will look into watermarking mine as well... Too bad I have over 500 pics on my blog, which will take me months...

We use a software that would mark all your pics at once. I'll sent you a pm with its name.

I caught mine being used by a guy from this site on his blog. He said that he did it by accident. He started here posting like gangbusters now he is not so active. Said he liked my fly so he copied it to tie it and mistakenly posted it as his.

Reminds me of one aduld joke where guy fell and accidentally inserted his thing into some else's wife.

Just curious how you even stumbled on that? Were you lucky that you happened onto his blog or did an image pop up in a search you were doing for something else.

A board member on another site I frequent saw it and alerted me.

I would also be interested in this program if you could message me the name as well.

You can do it for free with Gimp... My concern is all the photos I have uploaded already... I might just have to download them all, watermark them, re-upload them, and then re-link every photo on my blog...

I don't have the time for all of that personally. I think I'll just forget about it....

This kind of stuff goes on all the time, and there's really not a lot you can do about it, especially if you can't prove somebody actually made money from it. Your work is automatically copyrighted at the moment of inception, but unless the copyright is registered, all you can collect is what YOU CAN PROVE the thief got paid for it, or what you would have collected had you done the assignment. If he got nothing, you get nothing. It's rarely worth the effort. The best course of action is to raise a little hell, let them know you're displeased, and forget about it. A good way to avoid theft is to keep your online images at low-resolution - nobody's gonna steal a 500PX image. BTW - putting a copyright mark on your images is not going to prevent theft. Anybody with decent Photoshop skills can make a copyright mark disappear without a trace.

Next time, if there is a next time call the offending Shumk and pretend to be an attorney. I bet you will be able to hear his azzhole tighten right over the phone.

It is hard to believe what some people will do. I complained years ago on this site about not being able to save some tiers fly pictures to use as reference. I didn't really understand that people would use them for anything other than a good example to learn by. I may be coming up on 50 years but I tend to think like an innocent child sometimes and don't realize all the bad thats out there. When I used to collect stamps a water mark had to be made visible with watermark detection fluid. I just thought I would throw that in because the things on all the pictures are called watermarks now... Take Care, Naive Tony

This is why I post poor pictures of mediocre flies or mediocre pictures of poor flies :). Mine should be safe.

I am always working to improve the photos as well as the flies. I think my next project will be a "photo booth". There is a pretty good tutorial somewhere on this site if I can find it. I will probably start watermarking photos too.

I had this happen, too. I had pictures of my vacation last year. I found out the Chippendales were using them to promote their show.
