LeakyWaders 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2013 Just thought I'd follow up on this post as I was ordering new hooks tonight. If you like the Gama SL12S hooks, you can get 6/0 100 packs for almost $20 less than Millers. They aren't labeled as SL12S hooks, but they are. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QIO0RO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 edit: apparently I just bought the last one, because the 6/0 isn't showing up anymore. They do have 4/0 available though. Let me know if they are the same. I been buying them from Millers a long time but if I can save money somewhere then thats cool! The hooks arrived yesterday and they are SL12S . I'd keep an eye out to see if they add more of those hooks to the list.

If you dont mind an up-eye the Octopus Gamakatsu should fit the bill. The also have "in line" eyed octopus hooks that i use very often.
mcfluffchucker 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2013 Currently using Mustad 3407DT, only hooks I can find locally in 4/0+. The aren't too bad. Also some Mustad 3366 but couldn't find them bigger than 3/0. Looking to try some Gamakatsus soon. Would really like to try McFluffchucker's Esox hooks but the double whammy of exchange rate and international shipping keep delaying me. hi buddy I don't charge for shipping to the usa and you can pay in us dollors via paypal ...................no whammys at all there :-)
mikechell 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2013 I am going to answer this with a reply that will generate more questions, I am afraid. I stopped by a Gander Mountain yesterday. They have large hooks, already snelled with wire leaders just for toothy critters. It looked to me as if they'd make great fly tying hooks for pike/musky/cobia/barracuda or any other tooth laden critter you're fishing for. For the non-answers, I don't remember who made them or how much they cast. I do know they had extra long shanks and were of the 0/5 range of hook sizes. LeakyWaders 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2013 Cant speak for everyone but I dont use wire leader for musky! Generally speaking we use 80-100lb flouro I used to be all flouro, but have changed over to wire. I've got two main reasons for this. I work to hard hooking some of these fish that bite-offs give me night terrors, and wire allows me to change a fly quickly. Not getting bit off is my number one reason for going to wire though. Everyone has their ways! Neither are wrong or right of course. The normal catch on my lake is a 40"-50" fish and my bite offs are few and far between (knock on wood lol). As far as quick changes I use a snap. Musky dont care!
LeakyWaders 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2013 Has anyone heard from McFluffChucker? I ordered hooks 3 weeks ago, and haven't heard anything as far as followup goes. No tracking number, or any kind of confirmation that he has shipped. I understand shipping takes a bit longer, but the complete lack of communication makes me a bit nervous. Piker20 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2013 A quick comment on using a trace, wire guarentees 0 bite offs if you use a long enough trace. In the UK 10inch is an accepted minimum for lures/flies. 18inch if using bait. Also the 49 strand wires are generally finer diameter than the mono equivalent so your fly can 'swim' better. The risk to a fish that bites off a single hook fly is very slim. But all the time and effort it takes to tie some of the pike flies means if nothing else, a wire trace stops me needlessly leaving any in fish.
