crawfly 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2013 I decided to give it a try ...... the response was encouraging enough to do it again this year. Rules are made to be broken so let the fish decide!
TheCream 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2013 The most important rule to learn in fly fishing and fly tying is that there are no rules. I get a lot of my bass fly ideas and patterns from saltwater tying books and websites. You know what they say, a closed mind is a wonderful thing to waste. I'm both a warmwater & saltwater angler, and get many ideas from other fly types as well, even Intruders. Nothing, IMO, is outside the realm of possibility! Phish 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Not much more to say to add but I got plenty of intruders to swing on smallies this spring after the stupid steelheaders leave the water alone for me and my dog to fish all summer long!
crawfly 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Well I didn't know that many folks were doing it but I do lead a rather sheltered life .... :-)
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 How about this bad boy, tied on a 2/0 worm hook! A very large adult stonefly about 4 inches long. The big western style trout flies tied with foam, work great for bass.
Phish 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Nice hopper! When i got into fly tying the BLT Hopper were my very first ties.
eastern fly 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2013 Has anyone else tried this? I would like to see your flies. Kevin
Piker20 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2013 Are you still swinging the truders? I would think they are not so effective if pulled.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2013 Piker, I've strip retrieved Intruders like I would any other streamer & they work fine that way too. All that material pulses quite well, & SM bass seem to like it. I've fished them on a swing too, and dead drifted them as well. IMO, it's something that has to be experimented with to determine what the fish want. Steelhead may very well respond differently to the same fly, but that's no reason to only fish them one way when targeting other species. I haven't caught a Striper on an Intruder yet, but have no doubts about them working! Frankly, they're not that much different than some Squid patterns I've seen used for Stripers. Piker20 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2013 Thanks tidewaterfly, I think intruders are a great idea, lightweight for casting, impression of bulk in the water, slim to cut through and get deep. A style of fly I plan to use plenty of this spring. Will give stripping a go too as well as just swinging.
