EP fibers v. Congo Hair

Recommended Posts

Phish, just wondering about where you got the info on the treatment of the fibers to make them waterproof? That could attribute to the extra cost.

I do know from someone in the industry that EP fibers are polypropylene, which are buoyant and shed naturally.

One thing I do know is that for the price, he could allow free access to his tying videos; seems like he would make more money in the long run by selling more materials if more people had access to his videos.

I don't think it's much of a secret that Enrico is a great self-promoter who's gonna squeeze every buck he can out of the products and services he offers. And this is no knock on him - he's a decent guy and a very knowledgeable fisherman. Maybe EP fibers are the greatest thing since canned beer, but there are a ton of products out there that'll do a decent job without sending you to the poorhouse. I tried the EP fibers when they first appeared, but didn't find any significant attributes that would explain the high price. At least not in the real world of actual fishing. To each his own I guess.

I disagree about Congo hair absorbing less then EP. Ive fished both pretty heavily and congo hair definitely doesnt shed water like EP. It sheds it dont get me wrong, just not the same as EP. Ive tied peanut butter flies for sometime now. Some out of congo hair some out of EP. Hate to say it but the EP just seems better to me. The color in the water appears better and I like the extra 1.5" of length with the EP.

A while back I paid the $20 for a membership. This took me sometime cause I was kind of annoyed with the cost when I agree you should get access or something after making a purchase. Then I found that half the videos worked and that it claimed a pattern each month which wasn't happening. So I emailed them. Low and behold I got an email back from Enrico. He owned up to the issues, told me future plans and offered a full refund. I appreciated the email so I stuck with it. About 3 months later he upgraded the site and is posting new patterns each month. All high quality. So to me its worth it. Ive learned a lot from the videos.

Just my $0.02. Not looking to start a battle or anything!

A likely story. I'll bet you're already stockpiling cow flops and loosening up your pitching arm. (LOL)

Hahaha, anyway regardless of it all i find flies tied in this style and with these materials really quite good and successful.

Enjoying the 3d fibers and 3d silky for charlie wings, already blended colours which is quite natural and looks very nice in the water *stretch i got a tux fitting tomorrow, but might head down to the flats in the afternoon and just have a cast, oh it is a hard life 25degreesC. I am so glad to be away from 'winter' testing flies muahahaha.

the first time I ordered from a the Scientist I had it in 5 business days. I didn't realize that was not the norm. then of course I set a trip to Florida so I ordered a bunch of material from here in 5 days ago, and its going to be 2 weeks until I have it.

My advice: go with Congo but order it and forget you did...for $50, 30 days from now you'll have 2 dozen EP-like hanks show up in the mail. Like an early xmas!

I probably not a good gauge since I don't use a lot of congo and I have never used EP. I have ordered twice from the dungeon and the ship times have been close to what I get from most suppliers. I will say the second time I ordered I did so early to allow for the stated slow delivery. I do however like his prices. I don't recommend the rubber leg material that he sells.

I realize this is an old thread, however, I just happened upon it. It piqued my curiosity in that I have never heard of Congo hair or EP and have no idea what either of them are.

One thing I did notice as a common beef in most of the thread, was availability, cost and the time to obtain it. From what I could see of the product, it has an amazing similarity to "public" hair. Using a little dry fly treatment on it if desired, should keep it from absorbing water. It might be a good idea to do the treating before harvesting.

Just my two cents.......Pearl web from FTD makes great baitfish patterns and sheds water well. smile.png

I've never had problems with delivery time from FTD and I live downunder. ;)
