Fly Tying

Got the idea for this Rogue variation from a pic over on Westfly; thanks Chad. Lots of steps here but, again, pretty simple to tie and although I love bulletheads, this should be a bit more durable; change colors to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8

thread - UTC 140 tan

body - 2mm foam

rear feelers - rubber medium tan barred

underwing - landscape fabric

wing - elk hair

thorax - Ice Dub golden brown

front legs - rubber medium tan barred

indicator - 2mm foam

Insert needle in vise

IMG_5026.jpg

fold a strip of foam (hook gap width), push it onto needle

IMG_5027.jpg

IMG_5028.jpg

IMG_5029.jpg

start tying thread on needle

IMG_5030.jpg

fold foam over needle, adjust to where you want the first segment

IMG_5031.jpg

wrap thread around foam, pull slowly but firmly so you don't cut the foam and add a couple more wraps

IMG_5033.jpg

trim butt at an angle

IMG_5035.jpg

tie in feelers, "split the uprights", and create second segment

IMG_5037.jpg

IMG_5036.jpg

repeat twice, then tie off; slide off the needle and SHHAN the wraps

IMG_5039.jpg

insert hook in vise; poke a hole in the foam and push onto eye of hook (trim the bottom portion but keep the top long)

IMG_5040.jpg

IMG_5042.jpg

IMG_5043.jpg

start thread on hook and wrap back to 50 % mark (not sure if I like the thorax this big; may shorten it up a bit)

IMG_5045.jpg

tie in 2mm x 2mm binder strip and apply Super Glue; optional, but it really helps anchor the foam body on the hook

IMG_5046.jpg

IMG_5048.jpg

IMG_5050.jpg

tie down body and wrap forward to hook eye

IMG_5051.jpg

IMG_5053.jpg

prepare underwing (hook gap width) and tie in; extend back to butt of fly

IMG_5055.jpg

IMG_5056.jpg

clean & stack a clump of elk hair and tie in

IMG_5057.jpg

IMG_5059.jpg

dub thread/dub thorax; finish at the eye

IMG_5062.jpg

IMG_5063.jpg

fold foam over, extending past eye and tie down

IMG_5065.jpg

IMG_5067.jpg

return thread to back of thorax and tie down foam

IMG_5070.jpg

tie in legs

IMG_5074.jpg

trim foam and taper end

IMG_5076.jpg

tie in indicator, whip finish, SHHAN

IMG_5078.jpg

taper head

IMG_5080.jpg

and you're done

Very nice SBS with great pictures showing every step. Might have to tie a few of these up for some Florida panfish. Thanks for the time and effort you put in on this.

Great looking fly. I am always looking for a good durable floater.

As well I especially like your use of common house hold material ...underwing - landscape fabric.

What a great durable and cheap material. Do you use this in any other patterns?

Again Thanks

Fished a Rogue and did very well

after

decided to tie up some of the MCM's in salmonfly colors to see if

a. it would catch fish

2. it would stand the abuse

yes on both counts; this one took a pretty good beating and held up well (these are both "after" pics), a lot less fragile than the Rogue.
