McGnat 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 That was not my experience. The water was not wadeable until the hatch was almost over and the fish were still feeding on the cicadas. It may have been they had not gorged themselves earlier due to the higher water. Wish I could have fished it earlier in the hatch when the bugs were more plentiful. It was incredible fishing and brought up some big trout.
shoebop 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 I tried one this morning. It's pretty crude but it will probable work. I don't like the eyes...too big and orange instead of red. I will get some beads from my sis later and I don't like how the wings turned out. Any ideas there?
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 might try swiss straw for the wings and you need to make it fatter
flywhiteguy 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 for your wings what about mallard flank feather inside a piece of clear packing tape and trimmed to shape one for each side
Ebrant10 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 http://www.lorenwflyfishes.com/tutorials/dry-flies/periodical-cicada I really like this one, not to hard to tie either.
Goldenflies 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2013 I just learned how to tie Blane Chocklett's version this past Thursday. Dead on ringer!! http://newanglefishing.com/products-pages
Piker20 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2013 I know its not imitative, but would a booby work? The foam eyes are red, all the buoyancy you need, black chenille body and rubber legs. Marabou overwing? Very easy to tie.

Chefben4 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2013 Saw these on an inferior forum. They are nice flies and I believe the guy said the eyes are map pins. Pretty cool idea!
McGnat 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2013 Some nice looking flies. From my experience with these bugs, they land in the water with their wings splayed, not folded. I would go with a tie that has that feature.

McGnat 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2013 Sweet. You'll have to turn your back to the stream to keep trout off it until you can tie it on.
EricF 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2013 While not exactly a hatch chart, there is a map here showing when and where they are coming. http://www.magicicada.org/magicicada_ii.php I don't think we'll be getting them up here in Maine.. -e
