What hackles for Adams

Recommended Posts

I have some herbert miner variants that are similar to grizzly. I'd just look for another hackle that has a similar coloring even if the pattern/colors are exactly the same. May not officially be an adams but I'd bet the fish wouldn't mind a bit.

Cree, or barred ginger works well too. Or just a dun, and a dark ginger.

is black alright

Alright for what? If you're looking to tie an adams then black doesn't cut it. If you're looking to tie a fly that'll catch fish, give it a try. The trout will let you know. I've never used black hackle on one but who knows. Could work.

Neither cape will make an adams. Both capes can however be used to make a number of flys that catch fish. Try just ting a generic dry fly with the hackle you have, it will probably catch something.

Thats been a problem for a while, however throughout the fashion craze most tiers could still find hackle, especially very common hackle like grizzly. If you really want to get some grizzly im sure there's a shop around you somewhere that carrys grizzly hackle, some have even been mentioned earlier.

brown and grizzly hackle are the traditional hackles for an adams.

some tyers might use a cree or a barred ginger or a dyed grizzly to tie them

use whatever hackle you have for whatever fly you want to tie

GOOGLE "flies using black hackle" or "flies using furnace hackle"

be creative, experiment
