Any Massachusetts fly fishers?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am contemplating a relocation to the Boston area and wanted to get some input on the fly fishing options in the state of Massachusetts. My passion is wild trout, and I am particularly spoiled living in Pennsylvania. While I know I shouldn't be putting fishing high on the list of pros and cons regarding this important decision, we all know that it is on the list. So what do the folks from that part of the country have to say about the fly fishing options within an hour or 2 drive from Boston, and in the State or even in bordering states. I have been doing all the obvious googling, but hoped that some here might be able to offer some first hand insight.

Thanks in advance for any input you can offer.

There is a ton of places to fish in Mass. I was there on business for 8 weeks this past winter. It was too cold then to catch much, but the area abounds with opportunities.

I bought a book while I was there, "An Angler's Guide to Trout Fishing in Massachusetts". It's got locations for almost all of the trout fisheries in the State, complete with directions and some recipes for flies. It cost me 22 bucks. Send me a 20 dollar bill and I'll mail it to you ... if you're interested, PM me.

Thanks Mikechell! I will have to make my decision before the mail gets your book here, but if I do decide to take the job I'll gladly buy that from you. Just knowing that the outlook is good helps!

Mike.

I am hoping for some summer classes up there. I would love to visit and fish the area during "good" months of the year. If you are going, you won't be disappointed in the fishing opportunities.

Boston's a great city! In addition to all the good trout fishing in Massachusetts, you have some great saltwater flyfishing and your a short drive to southern Maine.......I lived there many years ago....Been back a couple of times in the last 15 years........biggest drawbacks......cost of living....excise taxes.....no fault insurance......also a lot of kettle ponds with great bass/panfish/ pickerel.....all fun on the fly......

I moved from western Ma. to just north of Boston area 12 years ago. Best fishing is in western Ma.I travel anywheres from 100 to 160 miles

one way to do some decent cold water fly fishing. The closest decent area in Ma. is Quaboag River in Palmer on Rte. 67. What

is also nice is the Willimantec River in Ct, just 15 or 20 miles south of Sturbridge. It has a nice TMA catch and release area right

at a rest area on Rte. 84!!!! Not far from Stafford Springs, Ct. The best fishing is "out west" in western Ma. at exit 2 of Ma. Pike in Lee Ma.

Catch and release area in Lee, Ma. on Housatonic River, Housatonic River is blue ribbon in Ct. by Cornwall Bridge. REALLY want

cold water fishing at it's best do TMA area in CT. off Rte 44 near New Hartford, Ct. Farmington River is very cold tail water. As for Boston

proper forget it. Take up Red Sox or Patriots games, don't waste your time unless you like salt water stuff.---John

Thanks for all the input guys! I have just now decided to not move for a variety of non-fly fishing reasons. But it looks like I have a few new destinations to explore next time I travel through MA!
