bluewater/gt reel for around $500

Recommended Posts

hey guys, im looking to pick up a reel to use on large gt and bluewater. Must have a reliable 15lb sealed drag, and beable to take abit of abuse. Been looking at the cheeky dozer 525 which seems to fit the bill but I have not been able to gather much first hand information. I am under the impression that it has a much stronger drag system that the mojo. Can anyone confirm this.

Idk about drag but I have the orvis Mirage and love it. Mine is for 7-9wt but I've heard plenty of good stuff about them all around whether people have used it for tarpon to sailfish.

You can look at Colton reels, the Torrent model: http://www.coltonfly.com/torrent.php I have a 10wt and it is stout. Lots of good reports from guys up north who are using the reel for tuna, etc. And it's a little bit under $500.

I bought the 11/13 and the 13/15 Torrents over the winter, and although I haven't put them to the acid test on big fish yet, I've gotta say that they have the most powerful drag of any reel I've ever owned. They also appear to be very solidly constructed, tight as a drum. Well worth checking out. If you call the company, you can talk to the owner Bob Filger - he'll answer any questions you might have.

Lots of really well built reels available these days. On my skiff we either use Nautilus (in every size range up to 12wts) or the old Billy Pate reel (direct drive model in either Tarpon or Bonefish sizes)... I have seen the occasional Bluefin model from Tibor selling used for less than $500....

The best reel any of my anglers ever brought with him was the Charlton, though. Very high quality with a super stout drag. Unfortunately I don't think they're still being made - and the last I heard they were kind of pricey....
