Crackaig 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2013 Steelheaders around here have been melting plastic beads onto hooks for years without any adverse effect on the hook. Thanks Moscow, because quite frankly I didnt know if it weakened it or not You certainly "weakened" it. Either you annealed it (heated it up and let it cool slowly) in which case it is softer than it was. Or, if you cooled it quickly, you will have hardened it, making it more brittle. Either way it will have affected the granular structure of the steel. Have you done this enough to affect it in fishing use? Probably not. Only once have I known a hook fail after I heated it. When I first tied Klinkhamers the instructions said to heat the hook to bend it. I did this until I had a hook break at the bend while playing a fish. Since then I have bent them cold. Bending weakens the hook but less than heating it does. Cheers, C.
C LeBo 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2013 ^^Thanks Crackaig Skimming through some tying books I found a pattern I never saw before but looked very effective, The Hair Wing Dun, by Rene Harrop, and tied some extended body versions with a touch of CDC Dub and Ginger Hackle. Enjoy! Thank You and Tight Lines, Carson LeBoeuf
Hellgrammite 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2013 Rusty #1. That was much better after getting my ass handed to me by that Adams. Wish they were all this easy. Wonderful spinner. These are great to tie and use, I love them. Adams is a tough fly. I tied small BWOs with no wings and just a single hackle when I was brand new, to get used to hackled sorts of flies. In 16 and 18, even bad ones will catch fish, and theyll make a size 12/14 look HUGE after a couple dozen of them. I still have issues with some styles of dries =( Amanda
