Robert M 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 Anyone have a good source for craft fur in longer lengths? All the fly shops sell the extra select in a 5" x 5" piece. At $4.50 to $4.99 a whack it seems like legal highway robbery to me. Found some 9" x 15" stuff at the hobby store but the length is way shorter than I am looking for, although it would probably make decent dubbing brushes. I am looking for larger pieces with at least the same quality. I have some swatches coming from one location to check out $1.00 apiece for a 3.5" x 5" piece will see how they work out. Any personal experience would be appreciated in locating a better source for this material or at least a few name brands so I can chase it down on etsy or ebay. ditz2 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 This forum's sponser sells some nice CF but I don't remember the price. Let us know what you discover. I do use the cheap stuff from Hobby Lobby to make some real nice shrimp up to a size 2. I could probably tie some even larger too. CF tail and a CF in a dubbing loop for the body and some beadchain to help sink them. Use rubber legs and mono eyes as you require.
Robert M 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 Ditz2 Are you talking about J Stockard or GCO? I don't think J Stockard is a board sponser anymore
Peterjay 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 You can probably find something similar, though it may not go by the name "craft fur." I used to use a lot of Polar Fiber, which was 3-4" long, and very similar. Made great baitfish flies for tuna. The way synthetics appear and disappear, (and change names) I don't even know if it's still around. FWIW: I've gone over to wool for most of my baitfish flies that require longer fibers. It has some minor drawbacks, but I like it a lot. In case anyone's interested, I found some very nice grizzly craft fur at Hobby Lobby the other day. Makes for some really buggy looking shrimp and small baitfish imitations. Good looking stuff.

Peterjay 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2013 That stuff looks great Kevin. It appears to be the same as Polar Fiber, but a lot cheaper.
Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted June 15, 2013 As far as I know, Hareline Dubbing is supplying the shops with the "extra select" craft fur. I'm sure they aren't manufacturing it so it has to be coming from somewhere, some type of fabric store/manufacturer. I'd do some searches on-line and be sure to contact the seller of the item and ask them to measure the fibers. Some stuff that is labeled long may not be the long you're thinking. When/if you do a search be sure to use other names than craft fur such as Fake Fur, Faux Fur, etc. Maybe even look on a package of craft fur from the craft store and see who the manufacturer is and look them up. Chefben4 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2013 For a while Ive tried finding a "craft" source of something similar to extra select. I have yet to find one with consistent length and good quality. Of course now I have a ton of sample patches of "craft fur/faux fur/etc" that are pretty much useless. Luckily I know that PJ was working on a couple outfits for the local talent show so I was able to send some his way!

Yeah, once the show is over, I plan to cut up my albino gorilla suit and dye the pieces. Too hot to dance in that getup anyway. Guess I'm really a fan dancer at heart, but it's been tough with the price of ostrich plumes being so high and all.

Robert M 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2013 Okay so my swatches actually showed up yesterday. Ordered them Friday morning so they were thrown in the mail the same day can't ask for much faster. Anyway it was a mixed bag of material I asked for samples of three different types of long craft fur. All of them are 3-4+ inches in length so the length works well only one of the swatches had a similar amount of underfur to the extra select the others are much sparser on the short fibers. The craft fur also varies a great deal in texture between the different brands two of the samples had hair much finer than the extra select one was almost a direct match. Now the place I got these swatches from sells by the yard prices range up to approximately $33.00 most of the materials come in sections around 60" inches wide. They will give you 5 free swatches to begin with and whenever you buy material from them they will allow you 5 more. The swatches run a buck apiece normally (this includes tax, postage etc.) and they are approximately 3.5" X 5" ( they varied from about 3" x 5" to 4.5" x 5") I will try to get some pictures of the material this evening if I have time so you see for yourself what they look like. I can give you the name of the company I got the swatches from if PM me.
