How many fly boxes do you have

Recommended Posts

Title pretty much says it all. How many fly boxes filled with flsy do you have. This is not how many you bring with you fishing its how many boxes you have total.

I myself have 10 boxes so far. Im sure that's barley anything compared to some of you guys.

Thanks

I have 3 fully stocked boxes that happen to fit in my chest pack, so I take those fishing. For me, there is no use in filling fly boxes just so they can sit on a shelf at home.

I bring fishing/have:

1. A dry fly/terrestrial box

2. A box with a leaf that holds all nymphs, emergers, and midge's

3. And lastly a streamer box, which rarely see's any action at all.

Nothing but trout in these parts so I only carry trout flies. I try not to carry too many flies that imitate the same thing either. I'm not going to carry 5 different BWO nymphs, 5 different, BWO emergers, and 5 different BWO adults (in various sizes) because it's not necessary. I have my favorite pattern for each life stage, so I just carry those. It works really well for me.

I agree no point having flies just for the collecting so I have a box for salt, box for tubes, box for salmon singles, salmon doubles, sea trout, a caddis box, an upwing box, buzzer box and then a big box I keep extras in to replace the ones in the fishing boxes.

Not really sure - couple Cliff's Days Worth, couple Super Days Worth, couple Big Cliffs, Couple Bugger Barns, three sci anglers, four sci angler knock offs, couple bass pro cheapies, couple homemade streamer boxes so lets say 20-25. Oh and two big plano boxes with dividers.

I have about 6 with flies in them. 2 Salt, 2 nymph, dry, streamer. Then i have a large box for extra salts and about 4 compartment boxes as replacements and for back up.

I have 5 (six if you count the big flambeau one that has been repurposed to hold beach glass). Two sixteen compartment wheatleys, one which is a mayfly box, one of which just holds extras and never really leaves the desk, one 12 compartment wheatley, for my caddis patterns, and one little 6 compartment one I use as my BWO and little soft hackle box. I also have a small scientific anglers box that I plan on using for small nymphs and emergers.

Wow! I'll have to think about that. I have one box full of flies that a friend gave me. I have two boxes I take with me whenever I go fishing. I have two boxes that I keep on my tying bench to hold my latest creations. I have one old aluminum box chock full of streamers that I tied when I was twelve or thirteen years old...forty years ago. There may be others I have forgotten but that covers most of it.

Also too many to count. Some are stock boxes, but for fishing I only have 4 or 5 River trout, 2 for Loch trout (one small flies and one large flies), Salmon and Sea trout, Salmon Tubes, and a very small one for when I want just a pocket box for an hour on a stream. Of them only 1 could be said to be full(ish).

Cheers,

C.

I'm with flytire, almost to many to count. I've got three or four in a vest that hangs in my shed, about eight hanging around my tying desk. A saltwater bag in my shed with about six, a satchel in my vehicle with five or six, a freshwater bag in my vehicle with about five, and at least two more bigger ones in the vehicle that I use to fish out of most frequently. That's just a rough estimate.

I'd guess 20-25 - and I'm talking big boxes, not the dinks that you can stick in a vest pocket. Tying is a creative outlet for me - if it were just about fishing, I'd just fill a few pocket boxes with a half-dozen patterns and be done with it. I usually keep a couple of 8X12 boxes in my boat/jetty bag - I only use a few flies per day, but I like trying new stuff and having a lot of options. If I'm walking the beach, I keep two or three smaller boxes in a shoulder bag.

I have just realised there is a universal answer for this, no matter how many boxes you have the quantity can be defined as "NOT ENOUGH"!!

Geez, used and not used I have too many to count. I have an box full of boxes I do not use anymore. Always looking for a better way to carry my flys. As far as what I am using now:

Trout: two boxes I take everywhere. Has the stages for the major groups. I also carry different boxes depending on where I am at. Summer trout streams in my home waters of N.ID and W.MT - three boxes, spring creek I fish in winter - 1 box, lakes - 3 or 4 more boxes.

Steelhead: I could get away with putting a few extra flys on my hat and be just fine, but I like tying for steelhead, so carry two boxes. I will put one of those away at dusk and grab of third box of skating flys to use at dusk.

It's not polite to count!

I really have no idea how many boxes I have, and I have no intention taking a count. Whatever it is, it's not enough.

I can count my fly boxes, but don't ask me to count my flies (I stopped counting when I hit 5 digits.)

Currently, I have 8 9X14" boxes these are storage for extra flies.

Then I have 7 6X9" boxes of these, three are additional storage of extra flies, and 4 are filled with warm water, and salt water flies.

I also have about 48 fly boxes of different kinds that have flies. Most of these can be swapped in and out of my vest or packs depending on what I think I need that trip, or day. I have sent over 1000 flies and 6 more boxes out to my brother, who recently retired. I refill his boxes when I visit, but maybe this year I will teach him to tie his own. Both my niece and nephew have fly tying kits I sent them several years ago, so he has all the tools, hooks and materials he would need to get started.
