Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 What does steaming the hair do? It lifts the fibres and 'repairs' any bent folded fibres, then you can trim again. Works for feathers and furs.
sunsignarcher 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 so trim to your final shape and steam then clean it up or trim close to your finale shape, steam and then trim the finale shape? What do you typically steam with? thnx
Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 Kettle steam, hold in forceps. Pass through steam so not constant heat on the fly incase other materials affected. I trim to nearly finished shape then steam just to finish off. Bruce or Cream or one of the other hair addicts will offer better advice.

FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 some pretty simple things was watching a mcphail video last night 'medicine fly' - more sea trout but i rekon coho would chew it.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 Lovely flies Jam. The medicine is a good fresh fish fly. Often tied even shorter and sparser. Often looks odd on a big bare hook but sea run browns don't mind.
tctrout 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 Here's a fun tutorial that I completed with my uncle, John Cammisa, who is 82. He's been tying for over 40 years and has taught me quite a few tricks along the way. He really enjoys tying the Humpy, thus I had him tie one for YouTube; enjoy! Thankyou Piker20, Yeah the medicine fly is so simple and quick to tie, i did dress it fuller than the example in the youtube and none of the fluoro on the head. Exhibits a load more flash than a blue charm so could be interesting to swing. Going to do a little scouting next week and count fish/ decide wether it is worth it yet. Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2013 Make sure you take the rod. Nothing worse than getting there to find fish and you left rod at home.

P7242546.JPG P7242552.JPG P7242550.JPG I hate you a little bit right now Jam lol...such beautiful flies and beautifully laid wings...I spent the last hour and a half trying to wing one medicine fly, I tried turkey, I tried goose shoulder, I tried goose quill...it ended in a fit of rage and a bodkin thrown across the desk...it is that frustration you get when you are 10 years old and something does not go right with a project or hobby...DAMN! lol

Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2013 the problem with the parrot is both tail and wing feathers are very stiff. Almost both sides are like biots. Just adds more spice to the problem of laying the wings.
