tctrout 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2013 Here's a Rusty Spinner that I just placed on YouTube; I tied this with hi-visibility foam to improve visibility @ night, plus utilized a turkey biot for the body to add to the realism. Thanks! TC

Chefben4 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Heat index in my hood was over 100 degrees F for me yesterday so I hid in my basement for a while at my vise. This is a articulating Musky baitfish. 6/0 rear hook, 90lb wire articulation, and an 8/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook in the front. Front hook is wrapped with some lead wire. I find it helps a bit even though im using 350-500gr sinking line. It also allows some extra movement in the non-weighted tail section. Here is my first go with the Fish Skull Articulated Spine set up. Ill be honest they are quite challenging and will take some practice to get it. Definitely not a fast tie but you cant argue with the movement. If you haven't seen it go here and check out the video they posted: http://flymenfishingcompany.org/. The hardest part is really the 2 tail sections. They are SMALL. Im not really happy with the way it looks but ill swim it (im my own worst crittic). Ill work at it and see what I can come up with. Crackaig 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Have you ever had one of those days? Whenever I put anything down the gremlins moved it! Anyway despite that I managed to make a start on a box for a neighbour who visits Canada once a year. From left to right. Green wire & Golden Plover spider #14 EHC #16 Knotted Midge #18 Copper wire & Golden Plover #14, Chartreuse wire and Woodcock #14,Sparkle Gnat #16. Having had enough of the small stuff I made a start on the big stuff with a Black and Chartreuse Foxy Bugger #8. The 3 wire bodied spiders have a Diamond Hard coat on the wire. Of course I haven't tied just one of each. So far about 4 dzn done. Cheers, C.

Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Yeah that fly swims great in the vid. Would make awesome sand eel flies. Is the tail fin feather coated and cut to shape?
Chefben4 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Gearing up for the chinooks and coho! Must have stocked box, you may notice a few of these patterns...Ahhh Mr ChefBen, that is the GAME CHANGER i see, le awesomes! Nice flies as usual jam'. What are you doing to take your pics now?? Looking fantastic. The gamechanger is a bada$$ fly... Took me a long time and some frustration to tie though, so its not for beginners if you ask me! Yeah that fly swims great in the vid. Would make awesome sand eel flies. Is the tail fin feather coated and cut to shape? I have NO idea what they used for the tail in the video. Its kinda driving me nuts. It looks like a real fish tail..its bizarre. I actually have a lot of questions after attempting to one last night so hopefully they elaborate a bit on their techniques. The tail I used was a fish skull frantic tail. At least I think thats what they are called.
Kudu 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 Ben I have ordered some spines from Flymen. I order from them frequently. I had the same question regarding the tail. It is not a frantic tail. According to Martin Bawden, it is ep fibers that have been placed on the shank like you would bucktail and then flattened between your fingers with ccg applied. You then cut to shape of a fish tail after cured. The body material is body fur.

FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 y0 Chef, photography is either with my cheap ass point and shoot or ipad, nothing special at all - i guess i put the flies on a record cover in the window and click away. The macro is 100% pure evil tho, every photo i take it seems to just highlight every tiny error then the colours are a bit strange. I keep things so simple haha, my 'tying bench' gets put away each time i finish, i don't even have a lamp at the moment so night time tying is just a guess. Oh with the game changer, could you just cut some feather sections into a 'tail'? Maybe add ccg?
Piker20 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2013 I agree feather like turkey flats that have a decent stiffness to them already, cut out the tip and that leaves a V shape you can coat and tie in. Two back to back so the shiny sides out. I guess using angel fibres or pearl EP or similar would give that vein like see through effect of a proper tail like in the vid. Not sure for fishing it matters but for marketing it makes a difference.
