Migabby 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2013 I made a Lanyard, because sometimes the vest is either too warm or is not needed. It works OK but it's tough on my neck. I have seen on line, Lanyards with Foam pieces at the top or around the neck, that would solve the problem, however I can't find the foam anywhere. Has anyone or does anyone know how to get that foam. It seems to be about 2 1/2" long and 3/4' Dia.? Migabby
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2013 I use the foam insulation for pipes
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2013 Same as Paul, I used the foam tube insulation that goes on AC lines back when I was making/selling lanyards.
dontheo 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2013 I don't like anything around my neck. If its too hot for a vest go to shirts and shorts with large pockets. My glasses will have a lanyard around them but if iam wearing them I don't feel the friction.
GdubyaSmith 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 You'll laugh but the lanyard I made years ago and still use...it's made from an old padded Rifle Sling! I put Grommets in the web strap and attached the nylon cord with my Alligator Clips on it to that. It is still adjustable, nearly indestructible, and cost me next to nothing to make. Crackaig 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 Have a look on ebay for solar pipe insulation for 10 mm pipe. Don't forget, for safety, to include some kind of break away connection. Cheers, C.
flytire 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 i don't usually load a lanyard with a lot of gizmos or doodads. nippers and hemostats enough for me. doesn't weigh much. personal preference but i have used aquarium tubing in the past. works great or even surgical tubing https://www.google.com/search?q=micro+foam+tubing&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=90XZUd_WKtKu4AOF94DwDw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1600&bih=775#tbm=isch&sa=1&q=surgical+tubing&oq=surgical+tubing&gs_l=img.3..0l7j0i5l3.55057.59114.2.59441.8.8.0.0.0.0.80.456.8.8.0...0.0.0..1c.1.17.img.gLcsZ7VDYSI&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.48705608,d.dmg&fp=14c2c45b968c8a30&biw=1600&bih=775 walk around that big box hardware store/department store/hobby store and see what they have in stock. be creative. experiment
natedubay 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 I'm surprised that Steve didn't beat me to it, but EVA foam straight grip for rod handles. You can get it in all sorts of colors, even camo and faux wood grain. I think it's 1 inch diameter typically, 1/4 inch bore.
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 I'm surprised that Steve didn't beat me to it, but EVA foam straight grip for rod handles. I built 95% fly rods so I hardly ever use EVA That's a good idea though, it's nice and soft and would work good for that purpose.

mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2015 I know this thread is a few years old, and I am not trying to revive the original question. Just seemed silly to start a NEW thread for a different question about lanyards. fshng84 showed some lanyards he's tied up on his running thread in the "flyfishing" forum. It got me looking at my own home made lanyards. I've been using one of them for quite a while, now, and I just got done modifying it. I had a hodge podge contraption on it for a "break-away" connection. My modification was to remove that. It was a bit "clunky", irritating and I didn't like the looks of it. I know I can buy "proper" break-aways, but most of you know me enough to know, I hate spending money on things I don't need. Which brings me to my question. Have any of you been choked by your lanyard? Do you PERSONALLY know of anyone who's been choked by their lanyard? I've seen some stories, but nothing confirmed. I think break-aways are great for pet collars, I just don't believe I need one on my lanyard.
Crackaig 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2015 The nearest I've seen was a report of, was someone who put a salmon tailer over their head to carry it. Got the handle stuck in a style. Qualified for a Darwin Award! Not the same piece of equipment but it shows the danger exists. If you are careless enough. Cheers, C.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2015 You can be sure that if the risk is there someone at some point somewhere will come undone.
djtrout 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2015 nice post Mike. I like my lanyard and i don't worry about break away, that is, for wading. to Piker's point, I'm sure i could find a way to fall and get wrapped up in it. i ignore the risk. it will break anyway, without designing it to break away, before it will choke me or break my neck. when in kayak, i wear a fishing pfd and everything is attached to it, nothing else to my body. I'm more careful with that scenario. I've dumped the kayak before, and any number of weird things can happen. last time i did i ended up in the drink with my fishing line and anchor line both wrapped around my legs. all i had to do to extricate from that was stand up and walk, pulling my kayak out behind me, but i can't count on that simpilicity all the time. so, i organize my deck and personal body to minimize risk. i also don't carry the anchor anymore as a habit, only for particular waters (flat or very slow moving river - too much risk having anchor in fast water i often float). i pull up on shore or mid-river island and wade fish rather than anchor. not a trivial topic, glad folks are thinking about it. Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2015 You should always have a good sharp blade easily accessible when around ropes. You never know when someone else might benefit from it, not only you.
