flytyer166 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 For all who struggle with fly proportions, there is a great piece in the newest aug-sep 2013 fly fisherman magazine on fly proportions with great diagrams/pictures. If I would've had this when I was first starting tying, I would be a lot further in my progress. I just thought I would pass this along. Matt
flytire 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 fly proportion charts of one kind or another have been around for many many years. i know they were around in 1981 when i started tying i just got that issue so ill see if its worthwhile reading
utyer 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 The first "book" I ever saw on fly tying, was FLIES by J Edson Leonard. Page 46 of my 1960 edition (first copyright 1950,) was 2 proportion charts and a hackle gauge. Yes, they have been around for many years. The ones in FLIES were based on hook and shank lengths. Great things to have.
kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 Charlie Craven's book has proportions for a lot of the current and popular flies. Its a great desk reference for me. Bill
planettrout 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 I going to be tying up a Caddis pattern today that was designed by a guy who can walk out of his back door and fish the upper Madison. It pretty much throws CW on fly proportions out the window...If I got caught up in "the way it HAS to be", I would not nearly have so much fun doing this thing (with the fishees)...I'll put it up in the monthly tying thread... flytire 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 doesnt the hook itself give you all of the proportions you need to tie a fly?? of course that is if you really need to be that exact!
Fletchfishes 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 I'll second that it is a nice article in Fly Fisherman. The diagrams in particular very nice. Written by Charlie Craven. Not new information, but nicely laid out. To many of the points above, the article mentions how maintaining proportions are probably more important to the fisherman than the fish (with the possible exception of traditional dries where the proportions can impact presentation.) I started tying commercially when I was 12, and if I would've had this at 12, I probably would've sold a few more
