Guest Report post Posted November 16, 2003 OK guys here it goes Since the birth of this forum I have always promoted "free speech" around here and I will stick to that. The dream that I had for this forum was to create an atmosphere where people felt like they were sitting around in somebody's garage talking and fly fishing and tying and just shooting the breeze. When your with buddies just hanging out there is no "censorship" and I believe that when forums gave rules against what people should and shouldn't say takes away from the experience and keeps people from being themselves. Now there is a small problem with the dream of a forum with "free speech" and here it is. Let's say a topic got brought up amongst friends at a fly shop and then it turned into a somewhat heated debate, only the people who were involved with the discussion would know about the arguement. Anyone who visited the shop the next day would be clueless to the discussion the day before and would not be affected. With this forum everything that is being discussed here it open for the entire world to read. The other problem is a topic is here forever and if a visitor stops by this forum next week a topic will still be here and thus could affect their decision in becoming a member. I'm just not talking about this particular topic but every single topic and conversation that goes on around here. With that said I have two things that I would like to ASK of the members here. 1. When bringing up a new topic about a controversial expect other members to disagree with you. The amount of passion that you feel for one side of the issue expect somebody out there to have the same amount of passion for the other side of the issue. Do not expect anyone to know your personal beliefs about religion or anything like that. 2. When responding to a controversial subject please do so with a level head. Let's not add fuel to the fire by shouting back at the person who started the topic or anything else. If you disagree that strongly with someone it might be even better to just not post at all because it will just turn into some type of fight. We put a hell of a lot of work into this forum and we will not let this place fall apart having people argueing over topics that does not have anything to do with tying or fishing. We do not want to "moderate" this place and censor anything that is going on, but on the other hand we have a lot of time and effort into this place and we want to ensure it's future and eventually have the largest community of tyers that anyone has even seen! Guys let's just use judgement before starting a new topic or responding to a topic Let's all work together to keep FlyTyingForum.com censorship free!!!! We got a good thing going on here and let's not ruin it, that's all that I ask.
Guest Report post Posted November 17, 2003 I agree with you totally SH. (That stands for SmallieHunter not Sh*thead, just wanted to clear that up) Also, it might be a good idea if a person reads a post and his or hers only response is negative/yelling. Wait a day or two before you respond and maybe you can find a more civil way of expressing your difference of opinon on the topic. (If that makes sense) Can't we all just get along....... Thank you all very much for your time. I am off to try and epoxy the backs on the grhe for the swap. Thanks Jim
Guest Report post Posted November 17, 2003 Thanks SH! It is so easy for a thread to degenerate when there is something the least bit contraversial involved, and repairing the damage is many times harder than causing it.
