brianbailey1000 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 I don't use very much head cement, but do like having it on my bench for occasional use. I'm tired of it drying up all the time. Any suggestions? Brands? Types? Thanks in advance.
Dcap240 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 I have some cheap wapsi water base head cement for a year now( I know that isn't very long) but I've left it open overnight at least twice and it hasn't really dried out at all besides a little crust on the cap. I use mostly on my finishing knots just for a little extra security and it works fine for that purpose as long as you let it dry well. I let them sit out in the open overnight but a couple hours is all it takes depending on how much you saturate the thread. I use sally Hansen for flashbacks and stuff like that. I have some 2 part epoxies also but I don't really use them much but I mostly just tie trout flies. I've thought about the UV cure stuff but I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost. brianbailey1000 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 That's funny, because I just threw away the Wapsi water base head cement because it was rock solid.
Crotalus 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 Sally Hansens (what else?) have never had a bottle dry out on me.

Dcap240 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 It is water base so you could always add a little water. The cap was on it? I don't have any other water based head cement to compare it to but I would imagine there isn't much difference between brands.

brianbailey1000 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2013 Hummm, I'll give that Wapsi another try, not sure what's up, but the cap has always been screwed on tightly. Thanks all.
Dcap240 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2013 Try Sally Hansen. I think it's a little thick but people thin it and lots use it as is. You can find it anywhere that has nail polish usually for like $2. Maybe your head cement was near a heat source or direct sunlight or in a hot car? Only other things I can think of. Troutbum11 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2013 I like zap-a-gap a lot but I prefer a water based cement for smaller flies...
flytire 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2013 bring back grifs thin, pharmacists formula or black duck cements!
MikelC 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2013 I use Dave's Flexament by Rainy's. I always buy it with the thinner 'cause it's a little too thick for smaller flies. On my larger flies and streamers, I usually follow it up with some cheap clear finger nail polish I buy at the Family Dollar store, works just as well as Sally Hansen's and only sells for a dollar a bottle. monty0681 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2014 Griff's Thin Multi-coat was the best that I've found. But, they quit making it about 3 years ago. Too bad… It was a great product.
Ty Flyer 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2014 This may sound strange, but instead of head cement, I use Krazy Glue. It's cheaper than head cement, and twice as strong.
