flyDology 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2013 I tied commercially, in that time I tied hundreds of dozens of deer hair fly's. I discovered that a t-edger from the beauty supply store AKA beard trimmer was an asset at bulk trimming of the deer hair flies before I took the razor and sheers to them. You cannot get super clean results but you can quickly get a desired shape before further refinements are made.

There were some saltwater flies I tied called Slab Sides that didn't need the refined trimming, and the beard trimmer was ideal for those. Great for the rough shaping if you have to do a lot of flies.

Crackaig 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2013 Wilkinson Sward make a razor with a hair trimmer on the other end of the handle. Its brilliant for the job, not overly large, about 1/2" wide, so you can get into the tight spaces. The teeth are large enough to trim deer hair. Many I have looked at the teeth are too fine. For rough cuts I use the trimmer at 90 degrees to the hair. Then to clean up and shape I turn it parallel to the hair, this gives a kind of grinding action to it. Cheers, C. Goats 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2013 I just bought a trimmer to keep my hair short. Shaving with a number #2 guard, I like my hair "high and tight". No SH%t, when I bought this trimmer at CVS I saw the beard trimmers and thought about using it to trim deer hair. LOL
MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2013 I've used one in the past.....warning! trimming deer hair is messy enough.....the electric trimmer throws it everywhere! Mike
SILKHDH 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2013 I've always used a straight razor blade bent to the profile in my fingers. One swoop and the round top of a popper is done. But when doing a diver that is tapered was a little tricky. This might be worth a try. Hell, I'm excited. WO HOO!!! "Honey, I'm going to Walmart, I'll be right back!!!!"
