Trouser Trout 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2013 The rod looks great Steve! I can't wait to get my hands on it. I'll be adding the Orvis Battenkill I reel to it, which only weighs in at 2.9oz. Should be a perfect ultralight setup for the small streams that I like to fish. Does anyone out there have any experience with the Scientific Anglers Mastery Textured Series lines? I've used the sharkskin line before, and liked the functionality aspect of it, but couldn't stand the sound it made and/or the cuts it left on my fingers. I was curious if anyone has used their newest textured pattern and if they are willing to share some feedback. Or if you have any suggestions as to what line would be a good match for this rod/reel combo.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2013 Aaahhh. A 2 weight rod with a proper reel seat. I really like that. If, or when, I get the finance officer to okay another rod purchase, I'll have to have you make me one of those, Steve. Every one I see at the stores has those ... Tennessee seats? Kentucky seats? ... the ones that just slide up over each end of the foot.
Fletchfishes 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 I'm using the Mastery Textured in a 3 wt these days. Still makes some noise when casting, but not as bad as the Sharkskin (or so I've heard since I don't have a Sharkskin line.) It'll give you some finger wear, but it isn't terrible. That being said, I don't love the line. First, I think it gets dirtier than a smooth line (which offsets the advantages when shooting line.) Second, I've had real trouble with the tip sinking - much more so than the Orvis line it replaced.

mikechell 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2013 Bruce, I've got a 5'6" 5 weight from Steve with Minima guides. The fly line shoots through them as if they were there. I can cast a fly as far with that rod as I can with the 7' with regular wire guides. I don't have to have the entire distance out, since it shoots line so well. I can also whip a fly under over hangs much easier, also because of the ease of shooting. Yeah, there's a vast advantage to those guides.
