jacobellis008 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 I see fly tying videos on Youtube all the time and ive always wondered what people use for their background. I see blue backgrounds all the time. I want to start making videos. Does anyone know what to use?
Piker20 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Many of the videos are shot toward the tier, so you see the shirt they wear. Can't think off top of my head any I've seen shot from tiers side. If you film it away from you its a little more awkward to work with the lens between you and the vice.
phg 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 When my sister did studio work, she had a cloth drape she hung up as a background. Just a few yards of plain cotton cloth of an appropriate color. Piker makes a good point, though. It's one of the reasons why the choice of shirt and color is so important to demonstration tiers. Even when it's a live audience, and not a camera, you want a good background so people can see what you are doing.
Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 I usually wear a solid color shirt when shooting a tying video as I'm usually shooting toward myself as Piker mentioned. If you have a good camera, you can adjust the depth of field so that the background is blurry and the only thing in focus would be the fly and vise, which case the background would be less important as long as it is kind of dark in general. If shooting from my back side, I use 11x17 sheet foam as a background. Solid color cloth or opened up shirt or even brown paper bag would work too. Dcap240 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 What, nobody watches hammer creek's videos in the patterns and tutorials section? Always faces away from him with a light blue background and his videos always come out pretty good and easy to see. I would imagine its a lot easier to work without a camera in between you and the vise though. You should leave a comment in one of his posts or shoot him a PM. Curtis Fry 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 Because we normally shoot from a viewer's perspective, toward the vise, we usually wear blue colored plain shirts as I feel that provides the most widely compatible color when tying.
flytire 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2013 If the camera is pointing in your direction please wear a light gray or light blue t-shirt with no graphics or dirt on it

Capt Bob LeMay 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2013 I don't (at least not yet....) make any videos at all - but I do quite a bit of fly photography and have had some of it published with articles I write. All I ever use are the inexpensive foam sheets you can buy in any craft store (and I have seven or eight colors to choose from...). Here's a sample.. forget the fly or subject matter -just look at the background.... Frequently I'll shoot the same item with two or three different backgrounds to see what has the best contrast for the purpose...
