Regal stainless or big game jaws?

Recommended Posts

Looking to get a Regal for my next vise. I have tied on them before, but only with the midge and standard jaws. None of the shops around here carry any of these jaws, so I can't look at them locally. Does anyone have any advice between the big game jaws or the stainless jaws? Most of what I will be tying is from 18's through 2/0 streamers. The big game jaws look like they come up to a fine point which appear to be suitable for as small as I will ever encounter, but thought I would ask here before I placed an order.

I tie flies up to 3/0 on Regal standard without any problem. I've tied as small as #16 on them before and they held really well. According to the Regal site, the stainless are for smaller flies so if you want to tie 2/0 you may want to opt for the big game. Personally, unless you are going to tie buck tail jigs or big offshore flies, I wouldn't pay the extra money for the big game jaws and just stick with the traditional jaws. I tie mostly saltwater #2 - 2/0 and they work well for me.

i think the stainless are hard to beat for normal size range of flies.i use the big game for larger flies only but they can be used for trout size also without too many negative results
