Flies for Crappie

my best crappie fly by far the last few springs has been very simple--- #6 standard dry fly hook, tail of marabou as long as the hook shank, ice dub body, and bead head. Crappie have big mouths and I like at least a #6 hook. Best colors have been white/pearl, chartreuse, pink, or white/pearl with a small hot pink collar behind the bead. In stained water down south, I caught a lot of nice crappie on #4 Clouser Deep Minnows, black over purple. Don't know why that color combo did so well, but it did.

I know several guys that swear by crappie jigs with purple and/or black. The two favorites were always purple/black and purple/chartreuse. Maybe there's something to it.

_{A great go to pattern for crappie in Kentucky is the good ole white bugger.......when the water warms I add a little chartreuse to the head with great results. Have fun experimenting with different patterns!}

A good fly for crappie and panfish in general is mentioned in "Fishy" Fullum's book Fly Tying with Simple Household Materials" Its called the Peel N' Stick. the book is available in print and kindle editions. The author writes the column Creative Tying in Fly Tier magazine
