tctrout 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 I use a mix of these: I have comparison pictures here: http://dryfly.me/2013/04/thread-uni-17-tmc-16-and-sheer-14/ on how they build up on a #24 Personally I use the sheer 14/0 for all my flies, up to #12 Thanks for the link with all of the comparisons; great information using some of the most common threads for small flies. planettrout 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 So to tack on to my original question, what would yall recommend for a small light gel spun type thread? I tie a number of smaller deer hair flies sz.20-14 (the pattern is the "speck" aka the irresistible) I have yet to find a great thread for spinning deerhair on smaller flies so I just end up using my standard uni thread. Any "advanced" advice? I have not found it necessary to use GSP for spinning deer hair, antelope or elk hair heads or bodies on small patterns like these: http://planettrout.wordpress.com/tag/retro-crippled-caddis/ and these: http://planettrout.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/p10106161.jpg but if one insists, knock yer' self out with this stuff, it puts GSP to shame: http://www.slideinn.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=706&osCsid=u328r5qd733gid58u3cp5vehu2 PT/TB
HalfDunn 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 Sheer 14/0 is my goto thread. I tried the super strong type threads but find them too slippy.(is that a word?) Uni 8/0 is ok but does not split.
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 Bugsy is 100% correct. For spinning deer hair on small flies, GSP will be no advantage at all, and I am a huge fan of GSP thread for spinning/stacking hair. Spinning hair on hooks as small as have been noted, you will bend or break the hook before you realize any benefit of using GSP thread.

hook549 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2014 My opinion is that the sheer 14/0 is plenty strong for all normal tying situations.I tye normal trout flies in the 10-20 range and have found this acceptable for all my needs.
