Taking liberties with Rats

Recommended Posts

Its a tale of two countries here in UK (feb 2014). Flooding in some areas draught in others. We had a dry winter 2012/13 followed by little rain in the summer and now another winter with no snow and little rain. The head waters are low and the rivers low. It looks like summer fishing going to be difficult and thought I'd better fill my small stuff box.

The smallest are size 12

Kool lil' rats! Wondering if u guys use any low water dressings, still a large hook but in it's extreme the tag/ butt begins halfway down the shank giving you a very reduced size pattern but still enough iron to make it track like a champ, even hitched....find the daiichi 2131 (ververka) is tops for that application. Sweet ties!

You dont see many low water dressings. So many guys only fish tube flies, or seems that way. Tiny 7mm tubes and a short wing. Or plastic cut real short. I prefer the way a hook swims if I'm honest and have tied some short. I'll be doing some more short ones as well as a few more small hooks to be ready for what looks like its going to be a hard year. (again :()
