outdoorsmanfool 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Hi, my name is nick i am new to this forum i have been tying flies for about 4 months now but anyways... i am trying to tie some hopper patterns but i seem to have trouble when i tie on my foam it just spins around the hook i'm using 2 mm craft foam and 6/0 thread. I do put a base layer of thread and i make the foam about the same gap of my hook but i just can't seem to get it to stay still. any tips would help, thanks! Nbing 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Get some super glue (with the brush applicator) and coat the base thread layer. That's what I usually do and they seem to hold up good.
RickZieger 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 If it is spinning when you tie it on then make a point on the foam to tie it in. Rick

Rick well the pattern i am trying to tie has a extended body and i really liked the look of that pattern and various patterns that match to it.
shoebop 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2014 A dab of glue is one way. Another way is to make "locking" turns. After tying in your piece of foam, lift the foam and make a couple of tight turns on the hook shank. Do this after each point you tie down the foam. That should help to keep it from spinning. ditz2 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2014 All of the above and you can also do a foam base tied around the shank. Make the body piece longer and tie it the full length of the shank and kinda wrap it all around the shank. The bring the balance of the strip from the back over the top and tie down as normal. It will also give the fly a little more buoyancy.

fisherousdotcom 0 Report post Posted April 4, 2014 As ditz2 said, wrapping a foam base the entire length of the shank is a great way to make sure you tie the foam in really well and keep it from spinning. This would, obviously, only work on certain patterns or certain hoppers that you're tying. For patterns that need full body both above and below the shank, super glue works perfectly to keep things in place.
