RBF: Starting guide wraps

Recommended Posts

I built my first rod this weekend. Turned out ok, better than a cheap rod you see at Wally World, but not up to the standard I would like to see. I found that my first couple wraps when I started out were very loose and if I were to apply any tension to the tag end under the wrap, it would pull through. Is this normal or is my tension off? How do you know what the right tension is? I have the ALPS power wrapper with upgraded chuck.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have 3 more rods in the que to build and I want the next one to go smoother.

I do have to say that I am having a blast, this is the greatest fishing related thing I have done since fishing!!!
