mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 I guess this forum is the best place for this. So, now I have a GoPro 960 ... and I need an SD card. I am going this afternoon to get one. Walmart has some 16Gb cards for $26 + ... Big lots has some 8Gb for $9. Anyone have any suggestions? Does anybody know how much memory a full 2+ hours of filming will take? Will two 8Gb cards be better than one 16 ... especially since it'll still be less expensive? What do y'all think?

kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 Mike- I use 32G for everything from my DSLR to Hero 3+. That being said, when shooting video, the write speed of the SD card becomes very important. Faster is better at capturing video, burst still shots, etc. The newer cards from Sandesk, Lexar, and Transcend have increased their write speeds dramatically.. They're more expensive, but worth it in my mind, if video is your game. Bill
bellevue.chartreuse.trout 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/ The address above takes you to an explanation of speed class - which may be an issue with how fast the GoPro operates or stores information Mike. Flytire's link recommends a 32G, class 4 (speed class ) card. Don't know if a higher class card works better or not. (I can't seem to copy links directly into responses or pm's Mike sorry - copy and paste the address above into a new window address line to see description of speed class). flysmallie 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 Bigger is always better. But having a backup/spare card is always a good idea. If I had to choose I would go with the bigger capacity card. But you have to pay attention to the class of the card more than the size. I wouldn't use anything below class 10. That's going to give you nice useable video. HD Hero 960 detailed specifications: Storage Memory: SD card, up to 32GB capacity (SDHC) Average recording times with 32GB SD card: 960p (30 fps): 5 hrs. 26 minutes 720p (30 fps): 8 hrs. 9 minutes WVGA (848x480 60fps): 8 hrs. 9 minutes Power & Battery Battery Type: Rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery Life: Approx. 2.5 hrs Charging: via USB to computer or optional power adapter Charge Time: 80% capacity after 1 hour with optional power adapter; or 2 hours with a computer’s USB port
kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 flytire- I agree with what you are saying. I wanted to call Mike's attention to the write speed, besides the GB size of the card. The reason that Walmart's , and the other big box stores prices are so low is that they have slow write speeds on their cards. Trust me I looked. Mike could try the faster cards and see how they work. Can't see any harm in trying. It could be that the original specs on the 960 have not been updated. Just a thought. mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2014 flysmallie ... I have all those specs from the paperwork and the website. My original question, do I NEED a 32Gb card? I fully understand write speeds (card class) and I am going to look for the highest class. But the battery life in video mode is only supposed to be around 2.5 hours. SO, if you can get 5.5 hours on a 32 ... should be able to put 2.5 hours on a 16. What I was really hoping for with this, was the experience of GoPro users who've used different cards.
