Southern Appalachian Trout Variety Swap

Recommended Posts

I've never been in a swap before and I am not even that good of a tier anyway. But if you would allow me to join, I'll give it my best shot. If allowed, my fly will be the haystack.

Just do your best this is were you learn by tying the same pattern over and over . The main thing is have fun with it the swap . There a lot of fun

Not all but most recipes for the flies listed involve wings and that's just something I've been getting into more and more lately. Sent DJtrout a size 26 black gnat with wings a bit ago but that's as small as I've ever gone. Tying between 12-16 getting wings in there isn't so bad, especially those that just use a single woodduck feather like the Gordon and some others. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of wings come thru, but if it's only tail, body, and hackle they'll catch just as much IMO. Feathers are more of an esthetic touch than something necessary to fool a pea brained fish.

I myself have been getting in to wings I had watched a video on all the Catskill fly pattern . I can't remember the name of it but I will look it up . It was a video I had got from the public library.

It's funny how something with a pea sized brain seems to outsmart me so frequently!!

All right, I'm a little N of traditional southern Appalachian here in VA, but I'll give it a go. I thought about doing a nice slate drake, and may yet change my mind, but I think I'll keep it simple and do a nice easy cream caddis.
