Planned to mount the Orvis Hydros 2wt fly reel on it and use it in place of the TFO 9ft 6wt with the Echo Ion Reel just for fun...LOL. It's a long rod at 10 feet, liking the blue finish, and wood reel seat. Not bad for $87... do feel some roughness on the rod tip area. Will see how it holds up. fshng84 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2020 Ordered the MaxCatch 2wt Fly Rod to go with the Orvis Hydros SL1 Fly Reel. The rod is 10' in length and balances slightly forward of the rod grip. First chance to fish was today. Temps were chilly but managed a few little Bluegill and Bass that went for a Soft Hackle and a Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly. Rod feels nice... liking the blue finish and the wood insert for the reel seat. Casts well... able to get familiar with the rod, and find its sweet spot. Main take away from today was to give the backcast time to roll out before starting the forward cast. So far, this combo is looking and feeling good. Will see how it fares this season in 2020! fshng84 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2020 Made the run up to Waterloo in Denison for trout fishing fun. Trout Derby was held the day before, so lots of trout to be had in the little pond. Brought the GoPro Underwater Video rig for another try at action shots of trout. Was a tough go with murkly water and lots of vegetation on the bottom to clobber the rig. Luckily, after making more mods on the fly, did get some video of the trout lurking in the pond. Of the trout caught today, two went for PowerBait Trout Bait, one went for a Power Nugget, another went for a PowerBait Nugget but lost it while landing it, and two went for Corn suspended on a Power Nugget! Really nice weather but warm temps. Will get a follow up video of the action. fshng84 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2020 Video shows the action on Saturday, and then summarizes Sunday's action... was able to fish Sunday morning before it started raining versus misting. Sunday's action required no strike indicator instead short pulls of the line and a fast retrieve had the trout striking at first light. Later, as the morning progressed, the bite slowed... Shifted to a slower retrieve with long pulls of the line and pauses to watch for any strikes. Overall, a fun time... Olive Near Deere did well! Tried two fly reels - the Echo Ion with a Rio Trout Max Skagit Head in 200 grain and Orvis Hydros with WF2F fly line. After Sunday's outing, switched the lines... rod casts the Trout Max well, and the 10' ft length is nice. The OPST Lazar Line mono running line tends to slip between the spool. Now using the Trout Max on the Orvis reel... has tighter tolerances and does not slip under the spool. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
