Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Please take no offense to this comment but your dubbing loop method seems to make an inferior egg shape while taking ten times longer to tie and trim then the common method of tying an egg pattern. Not sure how you previously tied your egg sacs but one snip with the scissors is all it takes to get a round egg shape. There's really no shaping going on at all and if want little waste try it this way. Takes less then a minute to tie with one simple snip.

Made it to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens, TX for a go at the trout stocked recently! Was an interesting round; the trout wanted "green" fishing flies and lures fished fast. Tried various fishing flies and different retrieves before settling on a short pull, steady retrieve. Did miss a number of strikes as well as lost a few when they threw the barbless hook. That said, did limit out plus has a great time exploring the Center. Do check out the video, and do stay till the end for the bonus.

PS: Was not certain if a fishing license was required. Later, confirmed with the TFFC that fishing is included in the price of admission... no fishing license needed!

Made the run to Denison to fish Waterloo Park Pond - small pond that is stocked with trout multiple times each season. Was a chilly morning but the bite started out well using an Olive Near Deere. Had to vary the retrieve to get them to strike. Managed to catch three trout, keeping two and releasing one. Hoped for a larger trout.

Unfortunately, trout changed their minds and quit striking fishing flies. Tried various patterns without success. Turned out the trout wanted PowerWorms! First pink, and then orange. No spinning gear, just brought the fly rod. Luckily, the OPST Commando Head's heavier weight made it a non-issue casting a tandem rigged near deere and trailing PowerWorm.

Do checkout the video... we hope Viewers can learn to fish by our trials and errors. In this instance, no spinning gear... fly rod can still do double duty! Trout Fishing Waterloo - Limited Out using Near Deere and PowerWorms!

Question from a Viewer on our YouTube Channel - COAF Field Team concerning how far up or downstream should you fish to give others their space. Initial answer was to defer to others for more input but did suggest talking to the other person to confirm where they are fishing. Made sense... but, found the answer lacking.

So decided to research further, and after a review of the top 3 Google Search results for "Stream Side Fishing Etiquette" learned a new thing or two, and then created a "Stream Side Fishing Etiquette" Infographic for easier reference.

May be of interest to some wondering how far should one fish from another fisherman. Do check it out - "Stream Side Fishing Etiquette”

Etiquette is always a difficult topic because it's based on many factors. Is it opening day on a stocked trout stream? If so shoulder to shoulder is acceptable. Fishing the shad run, then having your boat close bough to reach into the next boats cooler is perfectly fine. Is it a small stream or a large stream? Is it a stocked or a wild stream? Is it a popular place fished in mass or a little known trickle. Is it somewhere where there's hundreds of files of stream per angler?

The lines get blurred by the tweed wearing dyed in the wool trout fly fishermen. Here in pa theres a contingent of trout fly fishermen who believe if they are in the stream they are entitled to a 1/2 mile above and below Their current position. Jump ahead within a 1/4 mile of them and your a worm dunking heathen. They are an arrogant lot who think highly of themselves and their importance on this earth. So the company you find yourself in is also a factor.

For me it comes down to common courtesy . If you are friendly and respectful to others you will get your space unless you expect the next 1/2 mile of stream in both directions to be left all to you.

Agree... liked the Orvis News comment... Common Sense, Courtesy, and Coordination!

Fished a new place yesterday - December 27, 2019... Pottsboro Lake located just north of Dallas in the town of the same name... Pottsboro. Stocked with trout earlier in the month, was not sure if the trout would still be there. It's a small pond and may have had heavy fishing pressure.

As it turns out, the trout were there. They were readily feeding on something near the surface if not on the surface. In short order, caught two limits. One of us was using a Chartreuse PowerWorm fished wacky rigged. The other used an Olive Near Deere with no indicator and fished with varying retrieves.

Also, started with the TFO 6 wt Fly Rod with Echo Ion Reel. Then, switched to the Cabelas 2 wt CGR Fiberglass Fly Rod with an old 3wt fly reel. Lots of fun... PS: Ordered a new 1-3 Wt Orvis Hyrdos Fly Reel to use with the CGR going forward. More to come once it arrives!

Made the run to Pottsboro Sunday for another round of fly fishing for trout. Started late in the day due to the rain in the morning. Colder and windier than it was on Friday. Luckily, the trout were active and we were able to limit out. Since we knew the trout were there... decided to mix it up and fish different colored near deere - Olive, Pink, White... plus fished a Mop Fly, too.

After changing fishing flies and trying different retrieves, this trip we noted a few key items and posted details on our blog and in the video description. Lesson-Learned: Color does matter and the pattern will change unexpectedly as conditions change throughout the day.
