atxdiscgolfer 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2015 This is the pattern that I am submitting- CDC Biot Rusty Spinner size 20; the recipe didn't call for a biot but I just couldn't see submitting a CDC Biot Rusty Spinner without a biot. If anyone objects let me know and I will use thread for the body instead of a biot.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2015 Okay atx, where does the Biot come into play on that fly? Don't see no biot in there.
atxdiscgolfer 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2015 I know, it just has biot in the name but not in the recipe; this fly was from the Summer 2012 issue p.23 and at the time that I was reading the issue I was having a hard time getting the fish at my tailwater to take anything and these flies were supposed to work well for picky trout and I need all the help I can get at the Guad were most people fish wooly buggers and 1 guy even uses a jig setup with a white plastic worm like you would get at Wal Mart and catches a LOT of fish on it. vicrider 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2015 atx, you're in luck. I tied a size 14 Fender fly, which is a deer hair parachute with moose hair body and post. It was a LOT of trouble for me and took quite awhile to get 12 I would deem reasonably acceptable to show to others. While tying them I saw some small patterns on another page and added a size 22 biot black pupa. Quite simple with just black dubbing and cream biot over top for wing case. Well, after finishing them I had a couple of hooks laying up there so I tied you a black parachute midge with black UV ice dubbing and a classic Adams dry, both on 22 hooks. Those should be tailwater specials. One of the guys I know on another board swears by small black parachutes on the Guadalupe, if that's the one you refer to. And something that has always amused me is when everyone is trying to get those tiny flies with tiny eyes onto a leader because it's the only thing that will catch a fish I've throw spinners (where legal) and had trout hit it consistently. I've also used "sneaky petes" on fly only water (questionable legal?) and had fish hit that when the only thing in a fly they'd hit is smaller than a 20. atxdiscgolfer 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2015 I can't wait to check out that Fender fly , I saw that fly a couple of issues back and have been wanting to try and tie it. Those black parachutes are probably for the Trico hatch at the Guadalupe which is the major hatch there it seems; I have seen PMD, Caddis, Trico, and Hex hatches there but I have yet to see a BWO hatch ever on the Guadalupe

vicrider 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2015 Yep, mine hit the mail today. All caught up on swaps for now except the monthly "tie something new" swap. I think you'll like your assortment if you want to try the Fender fly. I've heard about it before and saw it in the mag and studied it a couple of times but was leery about giving it a shot. Turns out I was right. It sure didn't go as easy for me as the SBS they had in the mag. I really like the body of alternating white and dark moose mane hairs, but when you try to do that on a stem of DEER HAIR it sure doesn't go as easy. I went thru quite a few to just a dozen I'd send out, and not particularly proud of those. They'll fish tho. Whoops edit to correct Moose Mane on parachute stem. The stem is deer hair, then wrapped with two strands of moose mane, then top of deer hair is pushed down to flare out make the parachute. Designed to sit just under surface supported on deer hair umbrella.

Crackleback 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2015 Address please. I ended up tying the Greenwell's Glory from page 56 of the summer 2007 issue. This article sparked my interest in North Country wets back when it came out and to this day they're one of my favorite kind of flies to tie and fish. -Mike
