Piker20 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2014 It is the individual fibre from the turkey feather stem. From a wing feather. You will see one side of the feather has long fibres and one side short stiffer fibres. It is the stiffer fibres that you are after. Goose, swan, duck, turkey etc etc. All have biots and depending on the length you need they are all useful.
shoebop 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2014 This is a turkey flight feather. It comes from the wing. As you can see, it has uneven sides. The leading edge has very stiff shorter fibers that lay flat to the quill to add strength and aid in cutting through the air while the trailing edge has longer fibers to provide lift. The shorter stiffer fibers are what we call biots.
SilverCreek 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2014 A great way to save time when tying biots is to tape the stem ends to wooden dowel or thick pencil and spiral wrap the stems around the dowel. The biots will be separate and can be clipped from the stem.
