Can You Help Determine Material's List

Recommended Posts

The feathers look like cdc, the yellow might be squirrel or fox, the eyes look like barbell mono eyes, but the body has me baffled. Catgut colored red on top maybe? I think you could get the same effect by tying in some red fibers (hackle or a biot by the tip?) and stretch tubing at the tail then build a yellow thread or dubbing body bring the red forward like it was a wing case and then wrap the stretch tubing to make the segmented look.

1x long nymph hook

bead chain eyes

ostrich herl tail

body-? maybe some kind of strechy stuff like nymph skin or latex

ostrich herl thorax maybe in a split thread technique

dubbing of choice for head

I'm thinking possibly:

marabou tail, collar, and head

D rib body possibly colored on the dorsal with a dark brown marker

you could use any kind of dumbell eyes depending on how much weight you desire

hook 8 - 10 1xl, maybe 2xl

Just my 2 cents, hope it helps

Here's a better pic. The body as Shoebop has said may simply be a rubber band (latex), and colored with permanent markers. Bead chain eyes, but could be either metal or plastic. The tail & legs may be the fluff from the base of various hackle types, Perhaps from a grizzly hackle or pheasant or as said ostrich herl fibers. Appears to be tan or light gray. The thorax & I guess that would be a shuck? or wing looks like a natural dubbing. Coyote, fox, raccoon perhaps. Of course could be a blend too. Really hard to tell from the pics, but I doubt the exact material would make a great deal of difference if you use something that has a similar appearance.

The body is most likely Nymph Skin, it certainly is not Flexi-Body, common mistake though. The feathers look most like after shaft feathers or filoplumes (the secondary soft feather you get behind game bird body hackles). I've asked Dave for the definitive list of materials. We'll see what he comes up with.

A quick search came up with this video by Dave, it isn't the exact same nymph but similar. It clearly shows the same kind of abdomen which he makes with Natural coloured Nymph Skin from Virtual Nymph.

Hey fellas. Ive been gone a long time but was made aware of this thread by a few. This fly has been in the Orvis lineup for (oh..... I dont remember as I am getting old :-) over a dozen year. The one photo in question is tied by the Orvis tyers and of course mine is a little different.

Here is the recipe for the original version.

Hook: Daiichi 1730 sz. 6-10
Tail: Ostrich and Pheasant aftershaft
Abdomen: Virtual Nymph Skin (there is no substitute as all others deteriorate)
Collar: Ruffed Grouse
Abdomen: Yellow Ice Dub or similar
Wing: Australian opossum
Eyes: Mono eyes
Head: Mix of hares ear krystal dub and golden brown Haree Ice Dub
Happy Holidays!
