hopsandhooks 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 I like tying streamers the most. I tie with mostly naturals, but some of the synthetics are nice. What should I try tying with in 2015?

Stevester 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 Given the nearly mind numbing amount of materials that have come out in the last few years it is hard to give a suggestion. A couple of things that I have found interesting are the holographic tinsels, stretch tubing (Wapsi is the one I have been using) and something called lectra scale tinsel. I like the effect you get when you wrap different colors of tubing over the holo tinsel. I can't say for sure that the fish like it better but hey, we mostly tie flies for ourselves no matter what we try to tell others. Steve
Fisherboy0301 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 Try making a streamer, marabou from a dodo bird, collars of hair from wooly mammoth and bigfoot, with a spun head of Irish stag hair! Try going to the local dollar store/walmart/party store and get some synthetic wigs. Great synthetics for big streamers
mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 If you "like" tying streamers, then maybe it's not an issue of material, but of flies. For 2015, perhaps you should venture into spinning and stacking deer hair. Maybe do some foam or balsa bodied poppers. I've been tying with raccoon tail for a few years, and I really like the bushiness of it, and the way that bushiness doesn't seem to change much when it's wet. Perhaps you can try some wild varmint furs like that.
cjsnyder1234 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 I second FTD for good cheap materials. Try out making/useing some dubbing brushes for bodies and try some clear cure goo eyes they can be pricey but they really make a fly pop.

Crackaig 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 Not a material, but something that will change a lot of material. Try getting, if you don't have one, a coffee grinder. Put your dubbing in and give it a quick blast. You will be amazed how much easier it is to dub after. It is also a great way to mix dubbings. Cheers, C. mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 be creative! experiment Please read what I have to say, and realize I am not being argumentative. You write this at the end of a lot of your posts. But I have a problem with it. As I've stated on other threads, I am a vocational level instructor. The majority of my students lack one essential tool for creativity ... imagination. Troubleshooting requires several things, but knowledge and imagination are two critical aspects. I see hundreds who have all the knowledge but can't put it into practical application because they lack the "abstract". This isn't a character flaw ...it's just human. Very few people are inventors. When I see people asking questions that "Be creative! Experiment" would answer, I think the "asker" is one of those who ... can't.
Christopher K 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2015 I'd agree with the above posts, you can really get creative withs streamers, see what you can come up with! I love playing with different dubbings myself, so many uses!
