kimjensen 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 Anyone have the same problem with hooks slipping when pushing up on the hook in the vise? Especially thin wired hooks. However it does not move at all when pushing down on the hook. I use the first groove from the jaw tip. I have to tighten it quite a lot to get it to not move at all. Is this because the jaws are faulty?
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 no, it's because a vise should not need grooves in the jaws to hold a hook securely.
utyer 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 On a Dyna-King vise there is a locking notch. The lever will hold best when it is closed into the notch. Excessive pressure should not be needed if the vise is adjusted so that the jaws lock into the notch.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 Because of the clamping angle. Depending on where the hook is actually clamped, the hook may only be pinched at one point. Pushing down might be "bolstered" by the rest of the bend pushing back against the narrower angle of the clamp. Pushing up on the hook doesn't have the same "support", so the hook moves. retrocarp 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 I don't have any problems with mine now that I have found the sweet spot. http://www.flyfishfood.com/2014/02/dyna-king-barracuda-vise-review.html This may help Kimjensen.
126lineman 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 As pointed out previously, no jaw design worth its salt needs grooves/notches to hold a hook securely.
cheech 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 no, it's because a vise should not need grooves in the jaws to hold a hook securely. best response I have read on vises for a long time...
the.atmos 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 in my opinion, the grooves in the jaws aren't needed until you get into sizes bigger than 8. i tie mostly sizes 12-18 and never use the grooves... in those sizes, the hook shouldn't be going through the entire jaw anyways. kimjensen 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 I'm tying saltwater patterns in sizes 2-10. Some hook types sit solid while others don't. Shrimp bend and thin wire streamer hooks seems to be the worst. However I am having trouble with a TMC 777 size 6. It slips a bit. When I tighten the cam it's like the hook is forced away from each other. The point is forced down and the shank is forced up.

retrocarp 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 Yes size 6 in the front groove does spread the gape temporarily while tying. But the hook won't move up or down.
kimjensen 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 I have uploaded a video to YouTube that explains the problem. I can't insert the link. Search for Dyna King Trekker. Hook slipping.
retrocarp 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 I can see what you mean.... it is almost as if the hook is too thin for the groove
retrocarp 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 Have you tried slight cone adjustment.... it may spread the gape slightly but it will spring back after the tie is complete.
