Fly Tying

Dyna King Trekker. Hook slipping.

Recommended Posts

can you still tie a fly on it?

Yep. No problem. For some reason it seems that it's getting better holding power? It's black inside the grooves, but i have worned some of it off because of all the experimenting with how tight it needed to be to not move when tying. I have bend and broke a couple of hooks in it to see how tight it needed to be to hold the hooks rock solid. The hooks move a few millimeters before they snap or bend completely when pressing up on the hooks. The don't seem to move at all when pressing down.

Sometimes the cam lever feels like i need to use some force to get it locked and sometimes it doesn't need that much force. It's confusing.

I've used Kamasan #6, Mustad3366 size #6 Gamakatsu drop shot fine wire 1/0 almost looks like a size 6

and they all fit snug in the first groove without any problems at all ...no upward or downward movement....but hey my vise was second hand.

Maybe yours has to wear in a bit . You really don't want to be forcing the lever too much as it will put too much stress on the jaws.

I have thought about it. The wear in. But i have never heard that about Dyna King. Only Anvil vises.

I am scared that i'm putting too much pressure on the jaws, even as i tie the flies now. But i have never used a dyna king before, so i'm kind of in a trial & error thing. I just don't want to damage the vise.

Yeah I own an Atlas vise it's a ripper no problems with that vise either no sweet spot it just holds anything. But then again so does my Danvise.

One fly at a time Kim.

i have never clamped a hook in my renzetti traveler using 2 hands to close the jaws on the hook for fear of either breaking the tips of the jaws or crushing the hook that it breaks holding a fish

i dont think it has to be tight enough to bend a hook. thats for marketing advertisements

unnecessary if you ask me!

I was contacted by Dyna King about an hour ago. I should not be experiensing the problems i'm having with the jaws. I'm sending them in to either be replaced or repaired. Now i just need them to get back with me, so i can get the details.

I hear you. It was first when i noticed the hook was sliiping up that i did this extensive testing and found that this was not as it supossed to be.

The amount of adjustment needed for the collet on Dyna Kings is very small. I can tie a size 18 dry fly hook to a size 10 scud hook and adjust the jaws, what seems to me, very little.

ive noticed in your second video that when you put the hook higher up in the jaws, the point of the hook is still not exiting the jaw squarely. i suggest moving the hook up further in the jaws and make the point of the hook exit from the middle of the jaws. see where that gets ya.

have you heard from dyna king yet?

Yep, something is definitely wrong with the jaws. If you look a few post up, you can read that I have been contacted by Dyna-King. I should not be experiencing the problems I have.

Just reading this thread now. In the video it almost looks like the hook is not lined up with the bottom of the groove. Is this true or just the camera angle?

I have a Dyna-King Kingfisher, and it will not hold any hook solidly enough to break it pushing up when it is not all the way in the groove.

Just received the new set of jaws I ordered online. There's a world of difference between the two. So when I get the others back that I send in to Dyna-King, then I'll have a set in spare. Not bad. :-)
